I
Discussion of Possible Readjustment of U. S. Steel
Dividend Policy Arouses Interest Declines
Follow Good Advances, in Early Trading
' New York, Oct. .28.
Talk iilmut politic oiicl references to confused situation In Kurope
caused mi unsettled stock market In the forenoon today, and many Issue
were under pressure that had shown strength and nctlvlty In the opening
transaction. There was also n good deal of talk In the Street about a
probable readjustment of the t tilted States Steel dividend policy, by which
thai stock may bo plnced on a 10 per cent basis at tomorrow's meeting,
with a 2',4 per cent straight quarterly dividend Instead of the 17 per cent
tegular and extra rate that have prevailed for some time.
, There was a disposition to regard the war developments favorably
nnd the. market opened with this feeling prevailing among commission
house clients, who were heavy buer In the first few minutes.
Pool' manipulators were also aggressive, and for a time the maiket
seemed to be buo.vnnt, but It was not long before the demand was all
filled and opening gains In many, tocks were quickly turned Into losses,
United H'ates Steel sold at the opening at 111, fimn which ll reacted
to 109V4, und lltildwln Locomotive, nfter advancing to 87 li, dropped to
834.
Mexlcdn Petroleum had. Its usual wide- fluctuations, ndviinrlug 10
points to 186, and then dropped to 177. Copper stocks were the strong
est gfoup on the floor, nearly all' these Issues making gains of around I
point.
Itatlvoad Issues made ndvances of siround 1 point In the first few mill- ,
iites, which weie lost before the end of the first hour.
