ZIEK, I do feel mean. I told Ma:

Still I refused, of course, for haing
Krono so far, I wan trolng to see it )
through, but I feel a bit uncomfortable
about the wholb thine just the same. I
Say, but wan I the astonished kid !
when I Rot to Bellman's? I couldn't
hae believed such a chance could have
laKcn pacp In a week. Bruno Uuke
liad told Francis una me about the
plan he'd uorlied up for Bcltman to t-ell
the bankrupt stock he'd hought at the
rnlesinanshlp class last Thurpdii and
that remlndt me! I must write down
what Jethro Jones, the Instructor, tola
us, for It was bully Rood.
This Is what happened In Deltm.in's
store, . rail had been fixed up the
center of the "tore, right from the
front to tho rear. ThK of course, di
vided the store Into hahe.i. On the left-
hand side that's the side the coun
ters arc on the store' was left about
us usual. The fixture", full of frrnss
Kooda, locks and such like, made It
Impossible to niter them for a sale. .
The right-hand olde was quite dif
ferent, thoURh. The usual piles of i
brushes, clothes baskets, enameled ware
nnd general houae and kitchen Roods I
had been carried upstairs and In Hn
place a rough counter about three
fctt high nnd right up againrt the wall I
ran the. whole length of the More.
This counter was divided Into tec
tlons by croys plices about eighteen
Inches high and Uilx made the counter I
a scries of bins.
In each b'n was a pile of Rood", nil
nlllie and all unwrapped. These goods
wero the bankrupt stock. The flrst bin
was full of glass niouKe traps. A big
slorn oer them read. "Usual nrlce. 25c
self-help price. 12c." (The next bin con-

by turning a knob was forced on to the
brush. These were placarded "Usual
price, 50c self-help, price, 22c." A
pile of hammers marked "Usual price,
26o self-help price, lie" and bo on
right down the counter.
U the r?ar of tho store were clothes,
baskets filled with goods ready to go into
the bins as soon as they were empty.
Cach basket contained the unwrapped
article and a price card for tt, o that
It was only a minute's Job to nil up a
bin and get the sign up.
The end of all was marked, "Odds nnd
ends, 9c each." Del t man explained that
when all but two or three arctlcles in
a bin were sold they were put Into the
"odus and ends bin,
That isn't the whole scheme, though,
for between the dividing rail nnd the
first bin was a little swing gate. High
nboe It, eay about 6 feet t Inches from
(he ground, was a big sign which read:
"ENTi:il 1IBUR FOR THIS .
MAMMOTH si:L,F-aEiivici: ham:"
A great pile of market baskets just
outside the swing (rata was labeled,
"Take a basket with you and help your
self," At the far end of tho store, Just
where people would leave the "self-service
more," as It was called, was a little
desk at which sat onn of tho salesmen.
A. people came out he checked up
what they had In the basket and gaMi
them a ticket like you get at Chllds's
with the amount of goods punched out.
The customers then were, of course,
opposite the end counter, where they
I could hare their goods wrapped up for
inree cents or couia ouy the basket for
ten cent..
As a mtter of fact, during the ee.
ning I noticed that most people bought
the baskets. We cold hundreds of bas
kets for a dime and know they only
cost neven and a half cents. Ubod
biz. eh7
Well, sir. that thing worked like a
charm. There were thirty-tight bins
altogether, and the way those l-'-Bt Side
bargain hunters grabbed those goods
would have made you laugh.
Among the goods was a pile of hair
restorer, above all things, and I saw an
Italian woman with hair enough to
stuff a mattress grab two bottles. I
guei. because they were marked,
"Usual price, 12 self-help price. 29c."
The gangway was Just wide enough
for two person, to pass. Once Inside
the "self-help store" they had to go the
length of the store to get out, When
the crowd really began to come they
hustled the folks along so much that
people Just grabbed whatever they saw
before they were pushed on to the next
