OW I'll recount Perkln'n story of
his best life Insurance sale.
It seems that he had been planning to
sell Insurance to a real estate man for
a long time. He knew the mnn was
doing a land office, business and was
carrjlng only nbout $8000 worth of In
surance.
Nonj, If he approached Barnum (the
real estate man) nnd talked Insurance,
he knew ho would fall through before he
commenced, so he skirmished around for
a month or more studying his man.
"You can go hunting- rabbits anv old
time, but big game needs careful stalk
ing," he said.
Funny thing, I notice that whenever
those big fellows In the Insurance game
go after business they decide on a big
man with money nnd then spend all
kinds nf time In finding out how best to
tackle him
The 'II spend a week nrenarlne for a
thlrty-mlnute Interview, but boy! how
they make those minutes count I
Well, Perkins found out that Darnum
was a big, Jolly, fat chap, who had
started with nothing nnd by hard work
and being "Johnny on the spot" when
ever a big real estate chance happened
along had got n bunch of dough Darnum
was real chesty about his high rating
In Dun's.
When old Perkins was all ready he
called on Barnum and said, "Mr.
Barnum, l'o called to see you about
your business rating I've discovered It
Isn't correct."
Can you guess what happened? You're
right. Barhum blew up! Ho evidently
thought Perkins was a credit reporter or
something like that. He guessed his
rating was right and no one could say
ho padded his assets and get away
with It
"You misunderstand me, Mr. Barnum,"
said Perkins. "You haen't padded jour
assets at nil, but you have grossly
underestimated one Item of yours "
Of course, Barnum cooled off P. D. Q.
at that and asked, "What Item?"
"Let me((i8k you, Mr. Barnum," par
ried Perkins, "are you personally re
sponsible for our remarkablo success or
do you owe It to a manager or some
one?"
"There's only one man responsible for
Barnum's getting on In the world nnd
that's Barnum," was his boastful reply.
"It's as I thought," came back Per
kins, "and jet. In jour nsscts, you value
the most Important Item jou huo at
only $5000. You give the world a false
linpresBlon of jourself when you place
such n paltry figure on yourse'f "
"Five thousand dollars? Important as
set? Me?" Barnum hadn't tumbled.
"Hay, friend, are jou saying something
or just talking; What do you mean,
anyhow?"
"lust this." here Perkins hitched his
chair a bit nearer Barnum, "jou carry
only $5000 worth of Insurance, thus
placing thi't sum at jour estimate of
your alue. Fixe hundred thousand
should be nearer the mark."
"Lords-," said Barnum In admiration.
"You're a life Insurance agent, ain't
jou?" '
"Correct," PerklnB smiled,
"Why didn't ou say so at first?"
"What wou'd jbu have done If I had?"
"Clue's I'd hilve handed you tho Ice
water"
Exactly, and by so doing J'ou would
i have been deprived of knowing how jou

worn claim? vnliraelf an llllustlCC. Mr.
Barnum, j-du can't afford to put yourself
In a poor light with the world any
longer. Never mind amounts now: will
jou see the doctor In the morning?"
Barnum looked at Perkins In open ad
miration "A life Insurance agent! Saj j-ou
ought to be In the real estate business:
you're too good to be peddling In
surance," "Thanks, but how about the doctor for
tomorrow?"
"Bring him around, son, you've sold
mo all right, all right. I guess I ought
to have more insurance and I can't
dodge the logic of your sales-talk."
"He Isn't my biggest policyholder,'
