The stock market gave further substantial evidence of Its underMnR
strength In the manner In which It acted after receiving the shock, which
was contained In the announcement made bj the money pool commit
tee. It might bo said that there was no overhanging Influence of that
announcement when the dealings sturted this morning, although a num
ber of stocks showed moderate declines during the first half of the da.
as the supply which was pressed on the market at that time was chleflv
of Industrial Issues, and tl ere were reasons for believing that the selling
of these stocks was connec d with the later bujlng of the railway issues.
Xo one seemed to have any uneasiness over the prospects of a cur
tailment of banking accommodation, but many who were active In todav's
stock market affairs did not seek funds on the boardroom floor, applying
directly to banks for whatever they required and having no trouble In
having their lequests complied with.
The trading element generally took the bear side and offered stocks
at concessions during the first hour. One Important Interest was a
seller of United States Steel common, forcing that stock to below 110, and
stop orders, which were reached at that price, carried the price further
down to 1094
Later in the day this market leader virtually recovered its loss Other
issues, which had sustained declines In the early trading, made brisk
advances late In the day, when Marine preferred became a prominent
feature moving up nearly 2 points and crossing 103
The most important trading was In the railway issues, with attention
attracted to persistent buving of St. Paul at frequent intervals during the
dav
Trading in bonds was generally quiet, with about the most important
feature being a continued supply of the Liberty 3Hs, which sold down
to the lowest point reached since they first moved up to above 102.
There was little business in railway bonds, and those Issues were nearly
unchanged

ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY
DECLINES ON SMALL TURNOVER
Lehigh Valley Gains in Response to Quick Bond Sale
and Satisfactory Earnings Philadelphia Elec
tric First 5s Advance
There was only a small turnover of stocks on the Philadelphia exchange
today, and, with few exceptions, transactions were uninteresting. Even .Steel
common, which sold ex dividend in New York, did not show much activity,
and home share business uas nearly all in odd lots.
Weakness of Electric Storage Battery caused some discussion, but iio
news could be found in the Street to account for its decline of more than 1

.- . .. ..6t auuiuicr, un me otner nana Lenign valley Railroad showed
feood strength, advancing 1 on a few, trifling sales. This was explained

the satisfactory report of earnings which came out about midday today.
About the only other Important change was in Steel common, which
yielded nearly 1 point following the development of weakness on the big
board and then recovered most of the decline.
Lake Superior Corporation lost slightly, United Gas Improvement ad
vanced a little, while Philadelphia Electric and Pennsylvania Railroad held
steady at yesterday's closing quotations.
Philadelphia Electric first 63 advanced 4 per cent, and that was about
the only feature In the slow bond market. Liberty Loan Issues were ;ulet.
Tulk of New P. R. R. Financing
The Street was interested 'today In rumors coming from New York that
the Pennsylvania Railroad directors were considering new financing which
might call for an Issue of $60,000,000 teq-year 6 per cent bonds. The reports
had it that as soon as the contract between the company and the Government '
becomes operative tha financing will-be arranged, and that, as In the case of
the bonds of the Union Pacific and Lehigh A'alley, the new securities will
be offered to the public on a basis that would jleld considerably better than
6 per cent. It was not thought, however, that any offering will be made
until after-the fourth Liberty Loan is floated.
The new Lehigh Valley 6 per cent bonds were today admitted to quota
tlon by the New York Stock Exchange.
In connection with the announcement that the "We,st Penn Power Com
pany is to erect, under arrangements with the Government, a large electric
power generating plant on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, at a cost of' ,
$5,000,000, it is stated that the new business which will accrue to the company '
from the operation of this plant Is estimated in the neighborhood of $8,000,000
annually. The Government is to advance the company, for construction,
$2,000,000 and $3,000,000 is to be obtained through new financing.
