LITTLE OF INTEREST DEVELOPS ' -' i

si
There was little of special Interest In today's transactions on the Phlli
(lelphla Stock exchange. Outside of United States Steel common sales wefd
nearly all Jn small, odd lots, and up to around midday there were few changes
In prices. The tone of the market was strong, however, nnd, with an advance
of more than 1 point for Steel soon nfter the noon hour, there came small
upturns for several of the local leaders.
Electric Storage Battery gained U. Insurance Company of North Amer
ica , Lake Superior Corporation a trifle, Itapld Transit trust certificates H
and Pennsylvania Itnllroad a little, while Reading Company shares advanced
rnoro than 1 point. Lehigh Navigation started unchanged, but later sagged
slightly, and General Asphalt common, which made a good gain yesterday,
moved up U.
Tho favorable report of the Hapid Transit Company, which, came out
after the previous market's close, was received with satisfaction in the
Street, and the prospects of the approval of tho, lease between the com-

American Gas, Philadelphia niectrlq and Tonopah Mining held steady
and unchanged on small transactions. United Gns Improvement was un
changed, following a fractional advance. Union Traction closed up after
being unchanged.
At the opening Steel was inclined downward In line ivlth Its course on
the big board, but the later advance In New York was" quickly responded to
In tho local market. - L
The third 4U per cent Liberty Bonds were fairly active, but without
Important change In their price, while the 3s yielded to 101.50.
York Railways Net Income Drops
The earnings statement of the York Rallwajs Company, which came
out today, showed $85,760 in gross July operating earnings; a gain of $2607
over July, 1917, but tho not Income was only $4900 for the month, a decrease
of $9048. It Is probable, however, with the Increased fares In effect' this
month that the August statement will turn the tide so that there may be an
Increase Instead of a loss. "
For eight months thelcompany earned $716,644 In gross, a gain of $27,220,
and the net lncpmo was $119,263, a decrcaso of $26,387 as compared with
the corresponding period of 1917.
