a halt after the lKorous advances which had been made since Inst Thurs
day, and these Interests were hellers of .stocks from the opening today,
checking the upward movement that prevailed for a short time after the
start anil causing a dlveislon of bullish Interests Into other groups. In
cluding the copper stocks and some of the easily moved specialties
The factors on the bull side Included the further progress made by
the Allies In Trance, the better outlook for money with the establishment
of a market for acceptances by J. I. Morgan ,5. Co. and the evpectution
of the submission of Government contiacts for railroad approval were
Incentives for bujlng at higher prlies at and Just after the opening
Many stocks then were established at the new high records for the
car, and Canadian Pacific sold at 170'4 and United States Steel common
at 115 t
AVltliln a short time the foimer dropped more than 3 points and
Steel lulded more than 1 point, with several recessions In all the Issues
which had shared In the vigorous upward movement.
Thcie were no Indications, however, that the leading banking In
terests had supplied stocks on the advances noted at the opening, but It
was thought there had been considerable profit-taking by outside btijers
who had accumulated stocks since the beginning of the Allied drive.
Corn Products, Central Leather and the sugar shares became strong,
moving up ibout 1 point, und late In the day there was an active demand
for the copper stocks which was most pronounce1 in Inspiration Copper,
that Issue advancing mote than 1 point to u2.
Government bonds weie Irregular, with tho Liberty 3s In supplv
and dropping from 102 44 to 102. The second Liberty 43 rose from !)3 SS

Attract Most Attention in Local Share Trading.
Market Shows Finn Undertone
The local stock market was fairly active during the first hour, but after
that period business In all Issues, except United States Steel common, was
trifling. With the opening there came a thow of good underlying strength,
and General Asphalt common and preferred attracted neatly all attention,
the former advancing 1 points and the latter 2 points, while at the same
time William Cramp certificates becamo prominent by making a 2-polnt
upturn on a small transaction.
The majority of changes for other Issues were also to higher levels, but
there was little activity demonstrated. Electric Storage Battery advanced U,
Luke Superior gained tho same amount, but later showed a fractional decline;
Philadelphia Electric was unchanged following a trifling loss. Rapid Transit
trust certificates were marked up 'a, while American Gas and VTonop.lh'
Belmjjnt weie unchanged. P. R. T. certificates yielded to 26. Penn- .
HMvania Kaiiroad movca up a nttie, out closed unchanged.
United States Steel common held fairly steady throughout the session at'
around 114, against a closing quotation on Saturday of 11,4 'J. Mldvali
Steel was stronger, advancing on a small transaction.
Liberty Loan 3s remained around 102, the 4s advanced a little, while
the third 4Us yielded to 94 80.
