for the men do not confine themselves
to minor drltl work, but under command
of Lieutenant Cllenn MofTett. of Hutch
inson, Kansas, they arc studying French
tactics, and nre being used ns n demon
stration platoon for tho otilcers school.
Composed of fifty-seven men, nearly
all of whom aro college pinduate'i or
who have had previous military experi
ence, this platoon of seven squads Is
taking up advanced Instruction work
based on reports brought back from
"over there." It consists of ride Grena
diers, bombers, machine gunners nnd
llason runners, and each day some new
problem df field work is mapped out.
Third Assistant Secrctnry of War
Keppel paid a visit to DIx yester'day, and
made an Inspection of the camp.
Stetson Humphrey, who has Tiad
charge of slnclnc berc ns a sons direc
tor under tho War Department com
mission on training- camp activities, has
been relieved of his duties here and
assigned to San Diego, Cnl., where ho
will have charge of tho work on the
western coast, with headquarters at
Camp Kearney, Cal. Ho has been
succeeded by William Simmons, of New
Yory city.
Cupid Is busy In the Fifty-ninth
Pioneers, and Chaplain Davis has an
nounced the following weddings: Lieu
tenant Peter J. Somers, of Philadelphia,
and Miss Elizabeth Yenstrosa, of Brook
lyn; Private Charles M. Lannlng, Kings
ton, N. J., and Mlfs Madeline Miller,
Pennington road, Trenton ; Trlvate
Arthur A. P.amond, Buffalo, and Miss
Madellno J. Williams, Buffalo, and Pri
vate Frank W. Jendell, Wilmington, and
Miss Mary Benson, Wilmington.
Extradition papers having been grant
ed, Thomas Jones, a negro soldier here,
has been taken back to Wilmington to
stand trial on a charge of murdering
Elizabeth Greaves, a negress, on August
18, 191G.
An entertainment was given last eve
ning in the big hY" auditorium by the
men of the Eleventh Battalion of tho
Depot Brigade.
