learned this morning that Brigadier
General Joseph A. Gaston has requested
tho War Department to send a largo
number of 'the graduates of tho training
school here. The course will bo com
pleted next week.
It Is understood that the men are
anxious to go back to tho camps from
jwhlch they were selected, and It Is also
understood to be tho purposo of tho War

as Is possible. A majority of the men
who will graduate next week nt the
training schools at Camps Taylor, Han
cock and Gordon are Phlladelphlans.
There are also many from tho eastern
cectlon of Pennsylvania nd from Mary
land. Tho young ofllcers arc sorely needed
here. Not only second lieutenants aro
needed, but officers of higher rank as
well. Theso vacancies will bo filled by
promotion of the ofllcers now here after
the training school graduates arrive.
Will Honor Lafayette
Officers and men aro very enthusias
tic over the plan to fittingly observo
the anniversary of the birth of Lafayette
at this camp next month. When tho
folks hero were looking around for a
name for the new division It was de
cided to namo It In honor of the great
French man who took such a leading
part in the fight of the Colonics for
their Independence and they now feej
that the Lafayetto Division must do
more In the way of celebrating tho anni
versary of the birth of the great patriot
than any other body of men in the
United States.
An effort will bo made to have Presi
dent Wilson, the French ambassador, and
other dignitaries como here on that day
and review the troops of the division
and address them. The tricolor will bo
unfurled in nil sections of tho camp.
Major William F. Downing, Ordnance
Department, has been directed to proceed
to Washington for 'a course of Instruc
tion for division staff ofllcers at tho
Army War College.
