Xudcndorff Tries to Gain Time
to Withdraw Guns and

r" ' By the United Press
" frith the Hrltlsh Array, Aug. 12.
Von Ludendorfr Is oblous!y trying to
Tain time to bring up more reserves In
Plcardy possibly to permit withdrawal
of -his heavy r-rtlllery and stores to the
right of the Romme.
The Americans are with the British
before nray as this Is written. South
f!i,of the Somme the Australians are jiush-t-'lng;
on slowly, desplto steadily Increas
ing opposition.
Unless Von dcr Marwlti's army Is
able to make a stand, the situation may
become critical. It Is not surprising,
therefore, that the Germans are mass
ing beyond Proyart (a mile nnd a half
south of the Somme at Bray).
The Canadians have progressed be
yond Chilly (two miles southwest ot
Chaulnes), cutting tho ChaulnestHoye
railway at Hallu, while below this, at
Damery (threo miles northwest of Noye)
I personally witnessed the taking of tho
last portion of high ground before Noye

Tho hill Is 300 feet above sea level.
Across Its crest run the Amlens-lloye

wood crowns the hill. To the left of the
road the German positions were de
fended by concreto "plcklo bores" and
r.estn of machine guns, while trees we'tn
fitted up as observation posts. A mllo
to the northward lies Dimcry vlllnpe.

Rupprecht Is throwing In his reserves
as fast as he Is able to bring them up
for the purpose of slackening the ad

FEEDING OF STRANGERS
DANGEROUS TO SWISS
.German Press Exercised Over
Proposed Plan to Require
" Compensation
Special Coble to Evening Public Ledger
Covvrloht, 1918, by New York Times Co.
.. Zurich, Switzerland, Aug. 12. German
Journals refer with Indignation to the
' -fact that the President of the Swiss Con
federation has declared that tho Influx of
j strangers, especially Oermans and Aus
trlans, who come theso days to Switzer
land to feed well, Is beginning to he
dangerous to Switzerland Itself. Theso
stringers hav many needs which It Is
; impossible to satisfy, with the result that
hotel managers am obliged to monopo
lize great quantities of provisions and
'take them away from the Swiss popula
tlonr'who are themselves suffering.
The President has declared that a law
.will be proposed soon whereby quantities
-of provisions, held for strangers In
'.Switzerland, will be taken Into account
as subject to compensation to be chen
by their respective countries.
