to me after the excitement of the shock,
I had seen poor fellows gently placed
on the vessel, and I had seen how brave
ly they bore the pain which came to
them, even with the gentlest motion. 1
had seen how bravely they had Etuclt It
out, forcing a smile, and my heart
ached at the thought of the fresh pain
and even death which the disaster
brought to (hem.
Everybody who could lend n hand
medical oftlcers, medical corps men,
ship's officers and the rest ot us did
whatever we could to help the wounded.
I tell you It was an awful task, but
our hole attention was given to the
men.
"There were so many cot cases of
brave fellows who could not help them
selves that the task was a most dif
ficult one, and It was n stroke of for
tune that the vessel remained afloat for
about two hours, because that gave us
plenty nf time to get the soldiers off
the damaged rhlp.
"I shall never forget that night's
work in almost inky darkness, nor shall
1 forget the wonderful work of the de
stroyers that raced out to our assist
ance '
