The stock market clurlnpr the greater part of the forenoon consisted
of traders' operations nnd pool manipulation, causing n show of strength
In the first few minutes, which was turned Into Irregularity before mid
day, when a number of Isues shotted losses of 2 or more points, while
several specialties had recorded about the same amount of gain.
The room traders devoted most of their attention to United States
Steel common, basing purchases of that stock on positive statements
about the dividend declaration this afternoon, and helped -put the
price up to lOSj, but belling came from some sources, causing a reac
tion to 107T.
The railway equipment stocks were Influenced by statements In re
gard to Uoiornment orders, Pressed Steel Car and Hallway Steel Spring
being In good demand nt moderate ndvnnces, but other minor Eleel indus
trials were neglected and fluctuations In them were extremely narrow.
General Motors was again pressed for snle, declining 3 points to 1-40,
and there was a supply In evidence In American Sumatra Tobacco, which
dropped 2 points to 124 '4.
Lee Rubber and Tire and Kelley-Sprlngflold were among the strong
est of the specialties, and an advance of more than 2 points In New
Yoik Airbrake, which was unusually active, was another feature.
Mexican Petroleum was strong, moving up 1 point to 101, nnd Texas
Company was in brisk demand, advancing about 3 points to 153Vfe.
There was little public participation in the trading, but, although
outside Interests were not noted as buyers, there was no supply from
that source, leaving the market nlmost wholly of a professional character.

3 points net higher Commission houses
purchased, and Wall street sold
Stop-loss buying orders from both
Wall street and I.herpool shorts led to
n sharp advance after the opening, Oc
tober rising to 25.05, or SO points above
the previous close. There was a sym
pathetic jump In later months of about
50 points, followed later by moderate
reactions when the big rush ot October
coirlng had been satisfied.
Shoits were disturbed over the small
stock here, with prospects of further
reduction through shipments abroad and
Inability to get much of the staple hero
from the South, owing to the restric
tions on southern railroads and steam
ship lines
They also were affected by favorable
war news, prospects for a bullish weekly

Japan, on Saturday, says a Central News

The munitions were being transported

The local stock market showed a firm tone early In today's trading, and,
while business was not large. It ivas much above that recorded yesterday,
when there was only a turnover of 1750 shares for the full session. (
Interest again switched to General Asphalt, which has been rather quiet
Blnce Its unusual show of strength and activity some time ago, nnd, with
sales totaling 600 shares by the end of the first hour, the common was
marked up IVi points and the preferred scored 'a gain of 1V4.
Next tcJ" Asphalt Lake Superior Corporation was the most active home
stock, nnd It hel clstcady at yesterday's closing quotation, after being fa
higher. Lehigh Navigation advanced rt fraction, Philadelphia National Bank
warrants scored an upturn of V4 Pennsylvania Salt anad American Gas were
unohangel and United Gas Improvement yielded Vi on trifling transactions.
United States Steel common was rather unsettled, due to the course
taken In Wall street, but, after a decline to below 108, It recovered part of
the loss.
Liberty Loan 3V4s were quite nctlve In -the bond division this forenoon
nnd their price reacted to yesterday's low of 99.30, while the 4V4s were also
active, but slightly higher. Philadelphia Electric first Bs lost 2 per cent to ,
93 an a small turnover.

The Duquesne Light stockholders' meeting to authorize a $25,000,000
mortgage, held In Pittsburgh yesterday, adjo.urned until 2:30 p. m. August
5, without transacting any business. The stockholders were expected to
authorize the Issuance of $25,000,000 25-year C per cent bonds to bo secured
by a mortgage on all the property nnd franchises of the company, of which
115,000,000 was to be used as collateral to secure the proposed Issue of
$12,000,000 3-year 6 per cent notes.

army are prohibited in a War Depart
ment order today from taking gold with
them when leaving for foreign service.
Attention was called to, the fact that
this is a violation ot the . embargu
against gold exports and the, suggestion
was made that the men secure "service
checks" or travelers' checks and letters
has been nterned, Todd Daniels, chief
local agent of the Department of Jus
tice, announced today. j
In the affidavit Behrens gave his name
as Andrew Duyal and said he was born
in this city. He was' making an effort to
enlist In the merchant marine. A ires.
Fifty-eight cents Is the new commu
tation ticket fare between this city and
NVw York. The monthly ticket, good
for fifty-four one-way rides between the
two cities, may be purchased, beginning
tomorrow night, for $31.56.
The new rate applies on the Phila
delphia and Heading, the Pennsylvania
nnd the Central Railroad of New Jersey.
The tickets will be good only on the
road Indicated.
To guard against misuse of the ticket,
the holder will be required to provide a
photograph of himself, not more than
one and one-eighth Inches square, which
will be attached to the ticket and
stamped for purposes of Identlcatton
Each trip will cost about fifty-eight
cents. .

All parlor cars were discontinued
weekdays and Sundays between Camden
and Ocean City, Cape May and Wild
wood. Bridge trains between Broad
Street Station and Wlldwood were elimi
nated entirely. ' The bridge service to.,
Cape May will be continued.

business in this territory will be han
