Market conditions showed further pronounced Improvement again In
today's trading, with many Indications that the war news telling ot con
tinued Allied successes Is beginning lo fittnly linpiess ltelf on tho
country and Is furnishing an Incentive for accumulation ot stocks with
out regard to the disposition of the speculative element In the Wall
street district.
There are only a few Issues In which buying did not reach so large
an aggregate as to easily absorb all offerings, and nearly all the lead
ing Issues were established nt higher levels during the first houis' trad
ing. The more Important class of market operators, Including one ot tho
most aggressive of the room traders, havo ngatn resumed a position on
the bull side. The trader referred to bought fiOOO shares of United States
Steel common following the purchase of 6090" by K & C. Randolph &
Co., and there was commission house buying at the same time, helping
along an advance in the price of that stock from 1034 to 106',.
Other steel Industrials reflected Increased confidence In tho market
outlook, with Inside Interests again active in lialdwln Locomotive, which
rose from 89, to 91'.
Reading was the most active of the lailway Issues, quiet accumula
tion being agiin appaient in that stock, which lose from S76s to 883s,
and a number of other lailroad Issues made fractional gains.
A good deal of interest was attached to the early trading in American
Sumatra Tobacco because of the announced intention to issue new
stock, and in the early trading the price fell 1 point to 12SU. hut quickly r
rallied to 131 .
Tobacco Products was bought by Interests Identified with American
Sumatra and advanced Hi to 69 Marine preferred, which has been
quiet for some time, rose to 98s. ,

The cotton market opened steady this
morelng. at a decllno of to and 14 points,
the near months again ruling relatively
weak, Influenced by the further decline'
in the southwestern interior spot mar
kets and the forecast for showers in
northeast Texaa.
There was some foieign bu;.ing and
covering In the late months, giving a
steady tone to these positions. A few
July notices were circulated, and It was
predicted that If the July premium In
creased during the forenoon a consider
ably larger i.umber of notices would be
issued.
October waa in demand from one of
the large spot firms, while other trade"
houses sold the fall position very freely.
There were iroderate rallo in tho
market which adunced October to 21.31c
and December to 23.80c, t 23 to 29
points above the lowest of tho morning,
due to Increased support from trado In
terests, as October nears the 24c level.
Trading In July contracts ceased at 12
o'clock with the price at 24.28. or 48
points up from tho lowest of the morn
ing. Cmphasis was given to tho unfavor
able southwest crop situation by a wire
stating that conditions in Arkansas, Ok
lahoma and Louisiana were becoming
serious on account of the drovith.
There were exports from New York
of 9448 bales for Great llritaln and 709
bales for the continent, t was report
ed around the ring that It was neces
sary to pay 200 points on July yesterday
for cotton with which to replace the
staple that had been rejected on an ap.
peal to Washington.
The receipts at tho ports for the day
aro estimated at 3000 bales, against
2338 bales a week ago, 240S bales a
year ago and 6118 bales two years ago.

Failure of the expected cold wae to
materialize led to a big rush of selling
of corn by commission houses and a
sharp break in prices tills morning. The
busing power was poor.
The weather map showed no frost in
the American and Canadian Northwest,
although Canada reports temperatures as
low as 34 at Calgary anil Swift Current.
North Da'.-.ota, and Montana got good
rains with temperatures ranging from
44 to 02. There were also rains In
South Dakotn, Illinois and Ohio.

July opened at $1.53, against
II. 54 at the end yesterday, anil declined
to $1.33. August started at $1.54'9
$1 34, against $1 03, yesterday's last
price, and receded to $1.53. September
started at $1.65'S $1 54, compared
with $1.56, yesterday's last price, and
sagged to $1.345,.
Oats was weaker on general selling
by commission houses and local Interen.
Trade was not large. The receipts here
today were 131 cars.
July opened at 74.c. against 74 'c
at the end yesterday, and later sold at
7 41c August started at 70c to 69a.c.
against 70 c at the close jesterday
September opened a 69c to G8S; c,
against 69a.c at the close yesterday.
Tho receipts of wheat at Minneapolis
and Duluth today were 60 cars, against
74 cars last year; at Chicago 338 cars,
against 20 cars, and at' Winnipeg 25
cars, compared with 278 cars last year.
Shipments of grain from Argentina for
tho week were estimated as follows:
Wheat, 5,550,000 bushels ; corn, 200,000
bushels; oats, 900,000 bushels.

Philadelphia National Warrants Quiet
Trading was dull early in today's session on the Philadelphia Stock Ex
change, and, while the early tone was firm, changes in prices were gen
erally small and uninteresting.
The Street found further cause for confidence in the war news from the
Marne battlefields, but there was no definite position indicated by transactions
recorded on the bl board, and local market followers preferred to await de
velopments in New York before making many committments.
Lake Superior Corporation, which took tho lead for home shares, was
sparingly dealt In tind recorded but a fractional advance, while Electric
Storage Battery yielded a trifle, Insurance Comnanv of Nm-n. Antrim
and Union Traction were unchanged, Philadelphia Company cumulative pre-,:-
ii-i 1 eu iosi -,, aim Pennsylvania Kallroad was marked up .
Philadelphia National Bank warrants, which made sensational advancer
durinp the last two sessions, were quiet early today and only gained ,
which carried them to the high level reached yesterday of 121.
United States Steel common was more active than any other Issue and.
followliiR tho early course In New York, it was slightly higher.
Business during the first hour was confined to only eight stocks and,'
with the exception of Steel, it was made up of small Vdd lots.
Liberty Loan bonds were dull, with the 3s selling off to 99.30, while
the others that appeareld held fairly steady.
