The fAct that Wall street traders had become worried becauso of prospects of higher money rates was largely blamed for the lower prices on the big board, and It was natural that the Philadelphia transactions, should reflect the uncertain feeling demonstrated by tho action of United States Steel, Bethlehem "B" and other Important Issues. Lake Superior continued aultn active nnd. with Rnn.mi A.nv,.i ... .Electric Storage Battery, made up the bulk of business "in homo shares. ' But o.. o. oupenor Drought losses In prices from early In the session, and by mldafternoon It had declined to 19. General Asphalt common, which sold as high as 35 early in the day, dropped back to 35, and the preferred, which made a small gain to 71 against 70 on Saturday, declined below Satur days final quotation. Storage Battery, after changing hands without loss or gain In the forenoon, also took the downward course and yielded , not withstanding reports of unusually large earnings during the six months ended June 30 and exceedingly large orders on hand. Just before the close, however. It picked up Its loss. Steel common did not show much momentum early and later activity was at the expense of Its price, that usual leader declining more than 2 points. Reading was also iveak, although slow, and It sold off nearly 1 points, and Pennsylvania dropped i On tho other hand Lehigh Valley and Erie were unchanged. . Philadelphia Electric was a trifle higher before midday, but later lost Its gain, while American Gas, J. G. Brill, Cambria' Iron, Insurance Company of North America, Union Traction, United Gas Improvement and "William Cramp were all unchanged. Rapid Transit certificates declined a fraction and Tonopah-Belmont was marked up . Liberty Loan bonds were lower, with the first 4s losing most and de clining to. 93.70. Bhlladelphla Elec'trlc first 6s advanced 1 per cent. In terstate Railway 4s sold at 36, a new low point for the year. There was an ac tive opening in the marne. for coffee fu. tures this mornlne, with the undertone firm and prices on the call showing ad vances of 5 to 12 points Some of the bujing appeared to come from outside sources, with local trade Interests sup plying the demand A little last-minute covering by July shorts carried that position to 8.13c right after the call, with May, however, declining from 8 89c to 8 86c. Some of the early demand was be lieved to come from Brazil aswell as from Wall street houses, some of which were thought to be trading for foreign account, and prices held steady. New Y'ork, July 8 After displaying firmness In the early trading, the cotton market lost ground today, but it finished above the bottom on covering. One of the factors was a favorable report, by the. New Orleans Times Picayune, which made sentiment more bearish. It appeared to be the Impres sion around the rlngxthat the buying of last Friday and Saturday had eased the technical position. The average of crop reports from the south was favorable, pointing to a con tinued advance in the condition of the plant, although there were occasional despatches from Texas telling of fur ther .damage from lack of rain. New crop eastern belt cotton was re ported offering for October, November and December delivery at southern mills at 200 points on October at New York and at Interior points In Texas at 150 points. Business was email at tne opening and first prices were 5 to 11 points net higher, with the tone steady. There was only a moderate demand. Selling was held In check by the fact that the weather map showed only light rains in Tennessee, whereas moisture Is needed in virtually every section of the belt, following the recent hot spells. Spot firms and room traders were buyers, with uptbvvn Interests taking a small amount of October. The selling came from commission houses and Liver pool. At a decline of some 35 to 40 points from Saturday's closing figures, or around 24.60 for October, the market steadied on covering Rallies of 10 or 12 points followed, but business showed i a tendency to taper off quite sharply j and trading was comparatively quiet.
