The stock market Tas called on to stand another wae of reallzlns;
In the early trading today, and at the same time there was a moderate
amount of selling by London, assumed to be against stocks on hand here.
This selling caused recessions of around 1 point In the lirst fifteen min
utes, but afterward many stocks de eloped pronounced strength, and
during the remainder of the forenoon a strong tone prevailed, numerous
Issues, Including Reading, Mexican Petroleum and the equipment stocks,
making substantial gains
A number of specialties were also ncthe and strong, and, taken alto
gether the market continued to be controlled by bullish Influence, with In
dications of further adances In many Issues.
United States Steel common, which made a gain of U to 109,4, dropped
to 107TB. followed by a rally to above 108, and wider movements were re
corded in other steel Industrials, with Bethlehem Steel "B ' selling off 1
point to 85s8, and then ral!lng to 86.
American Steel rounders made a gain of 1U to ST1, and American
Car and Toundry moved up 1M to 83 Baldwin Locomotive sold down
from 95 to 934, but recovered all this loss before the end of the first
hour
Mexican Petroleum ranged from 734 to 93U and Texas Company
rose 2Vb to 155. Reading, after selling down to 90', advanced to 92,
with the bung coining from the same banking interests that had been
noted as accumulating the stock for a long period
Marine preferred also showed a strong tone after an early decline,
advancing fiom 102V6 to 103H.

Steel Common Makes Up Bulk of Business, With Its
Price Declining Lake Superior and Transit
Certificates Advance
Trading was exceptionally small during tho early part of today's session
on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange nnd the financial district found very llttla
of Interest ln tho limited transactions recorded. Steel common was about
the onfy Issue showing any activity nnd It followed the early trend on the big
board and declined. Other price changes were small 'and uninteresting.
Lako Superior Corporation advanced a trifle, and fractional gains wero
made by Lehigh Navigation, Philadelphia Electric and United Gas Improve,
ment Company. Rapid Transit, cortlncatesTtame out higher, at 24, whlla
Philadelphia Traction was unchanged.
Railroad shares were Irregular, Reading declining and Pennsylvania ad
vancing a trifle. On an unimportant transaction Baldwin Locomotive was
marked up , to 95.
Liberty Loan bonds were Inactive, but the regular 4s were weak, drop
ping back to 93.50, '
Philadelphia Electric first 5s were fairly active, but unchanged.
Withdraw Third Loan Deposits
Today Is an Interesting one ln banking circles. The Federal Reserve
Bank will withdraw tho remainder of the third Liberty Loan deposits,
amounting to about $27,000,000, and on Thursday the Federal Reserve Bank
will draw 20 per cent of the tax deposits held by institutions ln this district.
Thels Is also the last day In which to pay Income and excess profits taxes
without penalty, and there matures today tho Treasury certificates ln antici
pation of taxes. The great bulk of these certificates have been turned In by
tax payers In payment of taxes, but some will be presented today for redemp
tion, although the amount which the Government will have to redeem Is
problematical.
Institutions also begin making pajment today on the Initial offering o
Treasury certificates to be sold In preparation for the fourth Liberty Loan.
The Philadelphia quota Is $53,000,000 and pajment may be made until July;
2 Inclusive. Many Institutions will probably make payment by book "credit
and so the amount of Government deposits will be Increased during the week.
