By JAMES S. CAROLAN
nilllli: PARK, historic battleground

main battle frotit In this sector. The
gladiators, kings of their class, will b

the befit ci'rd of the jear. Not since a
fcathet weight champion and a light-'
weight champion clashed on the same
front eleen nunths ago has so inuch
Interest been taken In a fight.
Benny Leonard, outhful holder of the
lightweight title and one of the most
pop'ilar rlmmplons eer to appear here, i
again will go out of his class when he
does battle with Jack Hrltton. former
welterw light champion, and admittedly;
one of the craftiest of present-day ling'
warriors. Leonard, heavier nnd stronger, i
i win oppose uritton. iiaimeti to ue Jutd a
lltIe better than when he fought Leon
ard In New York last October.
Breaks K. 0. Streak
When I.t'onnid was fighting tegtiUrly
and keeping near the lightweight limit
his speed, science and hitting powers
enabled 111 i n to walk right thiough eery
thlng In hU class He i.ipldly was tilling
up a recoid for consecutlxe knockouts
when he took on Hrltton, and It wns.
Brltton's ability to go the required ten
rounds and still give Benny a fight that
put a riimp In the champion's wonder
ful K. O. tnak
Brltton never has been knocked out.
When Leonard engaged Uritton last fall
he underestimated the ability of hts op
ponent, for he figured that .making 139
pounds alone was enough to beat the
veteran welter The weight question
was the onl thing which kept them
from the second clash, and not until
Leonard Consented to permit Hrltton to
weigh In at 111 pounds was there any
thing doing In the way of clinching the
match.
I.oonard just now is well ner the
lightweight limit Continued work In the
camp has made him stronger ana
heavier, and to get down to teal fight
ing weight would require long weeks ot
Industrious training What Leonaru
needs to oppose the welterweights Is
weight and strength, and If he shows
his otd-tlme ring generalship, speed,
cleverness ami hitting powers, then it
looks like a win for the Cothatu Hoi.
But Brltton cannot be overlooked in
most of the big betting places yesterdaj
Brltton wiih the favorite, at odds ranging
from 9 to 8 to lu to S It wns said that
In the downtown section, where Leonard
has a great following, his hackers dliln i
hesitate to lay udds of Z to 1 and 5 to 2
on him.
Main Bout at 9
The wind-up will go on at 9 o'clock
sharp. Two preliminaries and a semi-wind-up
will precede 'the main go. A
big delegation of visitors Is expected,
judging from the heavy advance sale
The ring will be nearer the stands than
it was last season, having been moved
fiom over home plate to a spot mid
way between the home stnt'on and the
screen.
The piomoteis had planned to place
f-eats on the field and to have at leas'
100 ringside, but the Shlbe I'ark man
agement would not permit them to do
so for fear of cutting the turf The
ling is near the .stands and the fans
should have no trouble in following the
course of the battle
William II, Rocup, Spoils Keillor of
the Public Ledger, will be the referee.
Billy Gibson will be In Leonard's corner,
