Today's stock market reflected the Influence of the heavy selling by
Important Interests. There was a show of strength In u number of Issues
during the early trading, with somo buying based on false rumors about
n decisive Allied victory, but when these rumors could not be confirmed,
those who had been Urgent buyers quickly turned to the selling side.
An Incentive for aggressive bear opeiatlons was furnlbhcd In the
reduction of the Chlno dividend from $1.50 to $1 per share, as well as
In reduction In the dividends on Hay Consolidated and Nevada Consoli
dated. Chlno had a quick drop from 30U to 37H. and, although it rallied
fiom this price, was under pressure again late In the day.
Reports of ln-ddn selling of Marine picferred continued current, and
that stock fluctuated over a wide range, tlllng at the opening at 105 '4
and dropping In the afternoon to 100 7-S
Baldwin. LocomotHe was another weak feature, selling from 88 3-4
to Si 3 4 United States Steel made a gain of 1 point to 100U and then
dropped to OS 3 4.
Losses of 1 to 3 points were sustained in many other Issues, with the
market showing a thin demand on the recessions A few specialties were
ma'rked up hharplj at Intervals during the day, chiefly by pool manipu
lators, but the gains made in these stocks were not maintained, the pool
operations being discontinued In the afternoon. ,
Heading maintained a strong tone for a good part if the day, but
later sol doff with the other Issues.
There was a better tone In .the market for Goernment bonds today,
with Liberty 4Us traded In on an extremely large tcale at 05.04 to 96.20.
The second Liberty 4s sold at 93 42 to 93.54, and the 3s ranged from
99.G2 to 90 72.

The market on the Broad Street Curb showed strength for a time
after the opening, but inter became unsettled, the demand for stocks
being small after yesterday's advances and nearly everything traded In
showed somo amount of loss at the close
Mother Lode was one of the weak features, selling from 44 cents to
37 cents, and the new stock yielded from 4 to 3V4, with the selling accom
panied by expressions of disappointment over the terms of the proposed
deal It was Insisted that the Kennecott Company had no direct interest
In the proposed new corporation
The independent oil stocks, which have been active and strong In the
last few days, were all in supply at concessions, with Midwest Refining
falling fiom 112 to IOS14. Houston Oil, after advancing from 64 to 65,
sold off sharply. Sinclair Gulf made a gain of Vi to 19V4 in the early trad
ing, but lost this advance on a later reaction.
There was only a small amount of business In the war stocks, Aetna
Explosives ranging In the e.uly trading from 14 to 14, and Wright
Martin sold at 10 and 10. Submarine Boat was dull, with a few sales
at 1C nnd 16.
There was, accumulation of Chevrolet at 125 to 123 In connection with
the absorption of the company by General Motors.
A moderate amount of business was transacted In Federal Farm
Loan 5s, when Issued, at 101 and 101V4.

Trading in stocksjand bonds on the Philadelphia exchange was unusually
Email today, with the dullness of United States Steel common a prominent
topic if discussion. Continued strength of General Asphalt common and ft
big advance for William Cramp certificates also attracted considerable at
tention, but otherwise those In attendance In brokers' board found few devel
opments of Interest.
General Asphalt during the first hour assumed the market leadership and
advance to 19, a new high record price for this yenr, and Cramp, on a
light turnover, wns marked up 4. During the remainder of the day, how
ever, these issues were quiet and virtually all business recorded was In odd
lots of home shares.
Steel was lower, following the trend In New York, and It has been a long
time since that usual leader has been so dull, only 300 shares changing handc.
Itapid Transit trust certificates, which have been quiet for several weeks,
wcrjj'lcalt In on a moderate scale and scored a fractional advance, and Lake
Superior Corporation, which, next to General Asphalt, was the most active
stock, sagged off . '
Lehigh Navigation gained , Philadelphia Electric came out unchanged
and United Gas Improvement was marked up . On light sales Reading was
higher and Pennsylvania Railroad declined to 43.
Liberty Loan bonds were exceptionally dull, but the 3s, second 4s and
third 4 Us were higher.
Outlook for Pennsylvania Salt
President Joseph Moore, Jr., of the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing
Company, makes the following statement:
"In answer to a few inquiries, ther Is virtually no apprehension that tho
pending war tax bill will Involve a reduction of the company's dividend. The
profits under the present harassing conditions of operation are consider
ably less than during the boom period, and the capital employed Is larger.
Therefore the contrasts with results before the war, upon which the tax Is
based, will not imply a very serious additional burden unless the measure -ia
radically extremo beyond what Is now likely.
"Tho wisdom In these tempestuous times of limiting the Increase of the
dividends to 10 per cent rather than to 12 per cent Is now evident, Stability,
and not speculation, is the aim of the management. The next annual report
will present the company In superb financial and manufacturing position,
the equal of the best."

prevailed In the market for coffee futures
this morning, first prices showing a drop
of C to 9 points. There was a sharp de
cline at Santos, where contracts were

Liverpool was a good buyer of July
and October, the only tvo options In
which there was any display of business.
Some commission houses tooV small lots.
Uptown operators, trade Interests and
room traders supplied the list In the
early dealings, but the offerings were
considerably above the previous close.
The early advance carried July con
tracts to 26.43c. or 58 points net higher,
while new crop months sold some 25
points above Wednesday's closing figures.
Realizing, encountered on the advance,
caused some irregularity, but In spite
of the continued favorable character of
weather and crop advices, offerings
otherwise were light and prices held
within a few points of the best during
the forenoon.
The Interest of the trade seemed tp
center on the position of July con
tracts, with reports of a continued
demand for cotton out of the local stool:
Increasing the disposition to cover short
commitments.
The receipts at the port for the day
are estimated at 7000 bales, against
6471 bales a week ago, 9349 bales a
year ago, and 9631 bales two years
ago.
