All through the day there 'were mnny movements to new high prices of the year, fol lowed by t sharp reactions, with the market called on at times to absorb sales of leadlnc stocks In large olume. United States Steel held first place In speculative Interest, advanc ing 2 to 112, and later reacting more than 1 point, and other steel Indus trials moved up 1 to 2 points, but lost most of the Rains under a large, supply, which was brought out at the higher levels established. These reactions could be attributed to the Interest In other groups of stocks, as many Important specialties became prominent, making violent advances at times. (lenernl Motors, which sold early In the day at 121, had a quick advance to 12G, and Distillers, which sold as low as 69i In the early trad ing, later advanced to the new high for the movement of B3. Great Northern Ore was also prominent, advancing more than 2 points to 33, Heading for a time was active and strong, advancing from 86 to 88, but also reacted more than 1 point. Corn Products moved up more than 1 point to 43, making a new hlRh record. New Haven attracted attention around midday, advancing IS to 3G. Baldwin Locomotive, after an advance of 1 to 88, dropped to S6. United States Steel in the late trading declined to 110i. Interest In the bond market was chiefly devoted to the trading In the new Liberty 4s, which continued heavy, declining from 98.20 to 97 84. Am Sugar Am T & T . The majority of price changci wero to higher levels, however, with Steel ndvnnclng 2 points to the new high record for the year of 111 by tho end of the first hour nnd several other arbitrage Issues scoring good gains, nlthough none of them showed 'as much momentum as tho usual leader. Baldwin locomotive was marked up li, Midvale Slcel 1 nnd Cuba Sugar 1, these stocks following the same pourse as was taken In New York, the Steel share nnd steel industrials all being In good demand nnd selling at higher levels on the bfg board early In the session. The advance and activity of Midvale Steel caused some comment In tho financial district, there being a turnover ot more than 800 shares by'mld afternoon, nnd the demand continued good, with tho price holding fairly steady about 1 point above Saturday's closing quotation up to near the close. Several things were mentioned ns probable causes for tho momentum nnd strength -of this stock, which usually does little here, nnd from New York came a report that was received most seriously, to the effect that the com pany was negotiating for a large amount of Government work In a new line f.nt n good price. Tonopah Mining came out no' no' .so , unchanged, as did Philadelphia Traction. j .iet trie btornge Battery scored another small gala, Lehigh Navigation moved up A4, Avst Jersey nnd Seashore advanced , while Philadelphia Klectrlc lost n fraction, hut Inter recovered the loss. The agitation of Rapid Transit employes und ofliclals for a slx-cent fare was without Influence on the securities of that corporation, none of the cer tlflcatcs changing hands during the first hour nnd a half of trading, tlflcates changing hands during the 'first hour and a half of trading, and only n small turnover occurred In the afternoon, nnd the price sagged a trifle. Lnlted C!as Improvement was quiet, but a little high. Around midday a small sale of Philadelphia nnd Western, which had a sharp decline last week, came out at fi, a gain ot 1 point over the last previous transaction. Railroad Issues were quiet. Reading advanced 1 to 81 i and Pennsylvania was unchanged. A few shares of Philadelphia Com party and General Asphalt common and preferred changed hnnds without either losses or gains In their quotations. The weakness of Liberty Loan 4s ngaln caused comment. Sales of that Issue totaled nround $6000, nnd the price sagged off to 95, while the 3Hs advanced to 99, the convertible 4s gained a trifle to 93.80 nnd the new 4 Us which were, next to the 4s, the rNost active, declined to the low prl'ce at which they started last Friday of 98. 08.16 on oa.io oa ns A.80 03.80 .10 t07 .. 1 08 1 1 84 lompared with Todav Bid Ask Saturday Ill.l Afk 40 so IS All Mi 112 47 S7 40W 14 4H a An lHS 40 S7W I nil is .Ml fi in 4 JuH 1 43 811 4 A 01 33 42 IOA 00 16 A4 1.27V, .1 '.7S 1 271, 1 27S T 1 4Vi 1 42W 1 4AS 1 -t.1 I 1 064 4S 31 16 4A 3.1 80 KWH, 180 n8 , 38 .10 A 33 33 .13 20 23 73 13 Todd Shlpbldgs 6s. 34 37 08 70 06 1 2 1 2 A 12 A 4 4 A 76 II 42 38 SO 1 10 8 11 4 13 7-SJ 1 10 84 .1 iV 08 82 83 07 38 42 09 80 08 L S.
