Steel Advances, Then Declines
New Yorli, April 23.
The stock ninrUrt allowed h uniting disposition ngnln In tlio trndliis
this morning, with tlio majority of IIic Imlustriuls under pressure chiefly
from the specttlutlvo element on tlio lloor. and showing losses raHKlns
from fractions to about 1 point, while, n few specialties were strong with
coiieentrated buying In Inspiration Copper and Distillers Securities, mak
ing those stocks strong.
Ktudeli.iker common was one of the weakest features, being supplied
again by the same lioties that were active. In tho downward movement
about n month ago, nnd there was lencwcd talk about uncertainty over
tho maintenance, of dividend payments at tlio cumins directors' meeting.
Distillers was iiriiIii bought by the tamo Interests that linvo been
noted as persistent buycm for more than u month past, and that stock
rose more than' 1 point, crossing 60, n now high record for thin movement.
United Slates Steel made a sain of U In the early trading to fla'i.
but Inter dropped to 31.
Heading and Union Paclllc also rhowed strength In the first few min
utes, but lost most of tho Rains before midday.
There was continued accumulation of Inspiration Copper, which tins
been attributed to the Anaconda Company, nnd that stock made n further
advance of T to fiP.i.
There was a general disposition to again adopt n waiting policy,
partly because of the references to tho probability of another Uorintin
drive, nnd there was also a disinclination on the part of Important In-te-csts
to continue bullish operations liceuiif-e of the nrccslty of devot
ing almost their entire attention P ninklnq the third Libert) l.nnn a

KCtlon HRnlnst Jacob V. Shlck. ot Head
Inc. Berks caiiipalsn secretary for J. .
Denny O'N'ell, ntuJ that the matter Is

The Judee remarked from tho bench
Saturday after hearing a witness. tay
that Shlck had Induced him to ko Io
Philadelphia Instead of conduc hero at
tho time of tho hearing of the objec

Woodward, of Ashland, that If the tes

Tho crime, according to the District
Attorney here, was committed In Derks
County, and It may, therefore, bo the
duty of tho Berks County authorities to

with tho processes of th local court,
nnd it Is believed here that the Jlerks
County authorities will not of their own
volition mako an arrest for this.
Tho decision In the Woodward case
v?M probably bo handed down within a
day or two. Friends, of tho Allegheny
County Woodward express confidence
that the Berks and the HchuylklU'papers
of the petition of the Ashland man will
be declared Invalid iw.d the nomination
petition void.
The court lu an opinion yesterday
declared Invalid the nomination petition
Of Frank X. Brady, u Republican can
didate for the House from Philadelphia,
ant) ordered It set ttside.
'-' Objections to tha petition were filed
hy William J. Brady, and It waa shown
by witnesses, the opinion states, that
t the 112 signatures on tho petition
twelve wc.ro not genuine and another
Vwh that of a man not n resident of
the Tenth District. This left ninety-nine
1M signatures, and the election laws
r4Ulrfl 100 signature to u petition of
a candidate for the House. Two other
, 4nturea were spurious, the opinion
1 Mates, hut these were not referred to

hope and fair prospect that they would
.chleve close to 100 per cent before the
advent of next winter.
Today the coal Hlluatloii Is holding up
fprther advance in this direction, and
unless there Is some alleviation before
long, the steel men say, thero will be a
more or less serious drop "from nnrlh
weft to boiitheast" on the production
chnrts.
Thero has been no volume of notable
new contracts In tho last week, and the
situation In the market remains as tight
as heretofore. Sales transaction are at
an absolute minimum, with production
and transportation problems at a maxi
mum. Small offci Inc.. of off-grade Iron ure
available from time to time, but the big
problem Is that of getting them through
to purchasers, and not In finding pur
chasers. Permits for shipment appar
ently have little Influence under the
present conditions. More than one pro
ducer, despite files of permits, are un
able to get acceptances from railroads.
With whipping Instructions from the rail
road directorate, however. It Is possible
to get material on Its way with some
degree of rapidity. Without them there
Is no certainty ot anything except delay.
IIIGUEK VOTE EXPECTED
Includng Only Larger Cities, Esti
mate of Increase Is 150,000 Votes
llnrrlsburg, April 23. Neither Re
publican nor Democratic State head
quarters, has any figures showing reg
istrations In Pennsylvania this year,
hut the campaign headquarters of J.
Penny O'N'ell estimates that, exclublve
of third-class cities, the counties of the
Stale have registered 125,000 to 150,000
more men this year than were qualified.
to vote at the primaries a year ago.
Iteglstratlon day In tho third-class
cities this year Is May 1. Jn some of
these cities, the Dry Federation workers
und oJiers are trying to get the stay-at-home
voto out. The O'Nell estimate Is
based on returns from boroughs and
townships plus 60.000 additional regis
trations In Philadelphia.
Politicians of all parties coming to the
Capitol have remarked upon the lack of
Interest shown In nearly ull parts of the
State. They say the people are too much
Interested In tho war to talk politics.
The dry forces, working to organize tho
so-called church vote, have not been
making much headway In many locali
ties, for the men at the head of these
movements, It Is said by the politicians,
or- mostly persons unacoualnted with
politics, who spend most 'of their time
In talking nnd passing resolutions In
stead of blocking off voting districts and
Kitting workers out.
AVOID CHICK LOSSES
In order to uvold losses of voung
chicks, recommends the New Ji-hv
Agricultural Experiment Station, the fol
lowing precautions snouia oe observed:
Keep only good, vigorous, healthy
chicks, nnd do not attempt to raise
weaklings. Weaklings will only con
sumo feed and will never amount to
much, If diseased, they will spread the
disease to the rest of tho flock.
Avoid crowding. Watch the tempera
ture carefuly and do not allow It to
drop. Tend to the lamp or stove, as
the case may be. morning, noon and
night early und late am) If necessary,
during the night, though this should not
be necessary. Too much heat Is as bad
