trading on tlio stock exchange, the manner In which the Allies' lines hold
causing conlldenco In the outlook and being an Inceittlvo for substantial
buying till through the early forenoon. Stocks, were again In such
scant supply'us to be u subject of eoniinont, and the outside buying
brought In by the war news early caused advances In many stocks rung
lug from t to more than :! points.
Tool aellvltlos were noted In several Issues, especially In Distillers,
which lose more than 2 points to A'Vs, olid that stock hold strong all
through tho llrst half of tho day, although it reaction occurred from Its
highest point of tlio llrst hour. Thcro was trading in largo blocks again
In United Suites Steel, which rose 1 liolnt to SO',!;.
Ualduln Locomotive made a gain of nearly 2 points, ncltlng at "&",
and American Car and Foundry rose 2 points to 77.
As has been noted for some lime, tho trading became quiet after tile
opening, with moderate recessions resulting from fouio selling by the
room traders, but there was 110 ovtdcnec of long stocks coining out 011
the advances and tho tono continued strong all through tlio first half of
the day.
St. 1'aul preferred was exceptionally weal:, dropping 1 point to Gi3
on a few stiles. Heading was the strongest on tlio railroad Issues, ad
vancing 1U to 79i.
Mldvalo Steel, which was ex dlvidcntl of l',& per cent showed an
opening gain of 'j selling at 40. followed by a reaction to 45'i. Ana
conda advanced "i to flt&s.

There was a continuation of tho bear
ish feeling In tho grain trade today, be
cause, of Ideal weather and crop condi
tions. There are further heavy and fniito
general rains throughout the southwest.
Corn was weaker on scattered sc'Ilng
by commission houses, although resting
orders to buy were executed on tho de
cline. Trade was active.
May opened unchanged at $1.27 and
later sold at ?1.27'.i and $1.2Ti. June
started unaltered at $1.50 ',-i, July was
quoted at $1.60U to to $1.49?i at the
end Saturday and, after selling at
J1.49U, couched $1.00. The receipts
here today were 117 cars.
Shipments from North America for
the week wero 1.C88.000 bushels. Liver
pool reported larger arrUals. with the
demand for spot less heavy. Harvesting
of the crop Is making rapid headway
In Argentina whero offerings are In
creasing and prices declining.
Commission houses had a rush of bell
ing orders In oats and pi lees were
weaker. On the decline resting orders
wero encountered. Dealings were active
nml mixed.
April started 'sc lower at 87 '.fcc, but
later moved up to 88jO. May opened
at 83Tc to S3cC against 84 He at the
close Saturday, and later sow ai s-2c.
Tim receipts here today were 170 cars
Shipments from North America for
the week were 2,318,000 bushels.
The receipts of wheat at Minneapolis
today were 213 earn, against 045 cars
last year; at Winnipeg 282 cars com
pared with 24G cars last year; at Chi
cago 7 cars, against 40 cars a year ago
