"GERMAN OFFENSIVE COMPLETELY
BROKEN," GENERAL FOCH DECLARES
With the French Armies in tin- Field, April 0.
"Tho German olTensivo has been completely checked. The future
will give us tho full measure of thc victory which we have nlrcudy
attained."
Theao words were udd)ctsed to pewbpaper cot respondents by
General Focli, who received them in his headquarters at the fiont,
where he is already hard at work at his newly created task of co-ordinating
British, French nnd American military effort on the west front.
The veteran hero of the Murne, Yser and Sommo appeared in tho
highest spirits, radiating a degree of confidence Unit was contagious.
Turning to the wall, where there was u huge colored mop5 showing
the daily German advance since March 21, Foch said:
"You sec binco March 27 thu absolutely fresh advance by tho
Germans (Indicating fragmentary gains) und here we are.
"It is already April 4, and the German offensive, uftvr surging
forward, has encountered an obstacle and, having dashed against the
breakwater, has exhausted its force on tho beach."
Foch was surrounded by his own brilliant stnff of French ofllcera,
while in the adjoining rooms Arncrican, British and Itulian military
missions labored in co-operative efforts toward establishing u unity
of command of the Allied forces on the west front
Again the Atlantic Refining Company makes a
notable contribution to Philadelphia architecture.
This time it comes in the form of a service station of
Grecian design, partly surrounded by an Ionic colon
nade, beautiful in conception and execution.
It is difficult to conceive of any connection
between this architectural masterpiece and the com
mercial life of the city, and its environs. Yet thc
practical has been combined with the idealistic with
true finesse.
The colonnade and buildings are done in white
tile. An ingenious system of indirect lighting gives
the effect of some strange and beautiful apparition
standing out in bold relief in the dark of night.
Fifteen gasoline-filling stations and two mote
oil stations are encased in white pedestals along t
driveway, fitting into the surroundings as part of t
general classic scheme. Seventeen cars may
accommodated at one time, and kept off the str
the while.
The round building contains offices and sal'
room, while a building at the intersection of the t
wings of the colonnade houses retiring rooms, stp
rooms and operating machinery.
