Women Invade Public Service Corporations

to the fact that whereas tho General Ulcctilc Company Is frequently
r;uoted as pajlng S per cent dividend on Its stock. It Is actually no.v on
a regular 12 per cent dividend basis, as tho company has adopted tho
policy of paying 1 per cent in stock dividends In addition to tho 8 per
cent paid In cash. This has been mado possible by the largo accumula
tion of surplus earnings covering a period ot years asalnst which no
stock has herctoforo been Issued.
Metropolitan KdUon Company of Heading, a subsidiary of Heading
Transit and Light Company, reports that provision has now been made
to handle all the electric power rcqulicments ot Lebanon. Pa., ftoni rho
' West Reading plant ot the company. To effect this change from the
Lebanon plant formerly In uso tho now $100,000 transmission lino from
West Heading was stepped up a few days ago to 33,000 volts. As a
icsult of the change It Is expected that the efficiency yof the set tiro to
the Industries of Lebanon will be increased. The Lebanon plant ttlll be
retalped for emergencies.

These remarks are cuggevted here by the announcement of a new
Issue of to-car 7 per cent coupon gold notes for $3,000,000 of the
International Cotton Mills, a .luasachuaetts corporation, by a syndicate
composed of Lee, Hlgcin.on & Co. and Iilair & Co.. of New York. These
notes ore offered to the public at 98U to yield about 7.S0 per cent, and
the company agrees to pay the normal Federal income tac up to 2
per cent.
On inquiry It was found t)iat the International Cotton Mills Is manu
factuilng only for the United States, Government at the present time.
Its product Is cotton duels. Its net profits for 1917 amounted to
