The stock market in the two liuuis nt trading, with which tho wools

Market Shows Undcrliino Strength
Market umlerljlng Mtengtlt was tho featute of the stock market
throughout tho last week, notwithstanding tho many unfnvoroblo dccb
opments during Unit peilod which, under oidlnary elicuinbtanccs. might
hao been expected to crcito a widespread Felling movement. There ap
peared to be the best character of busing from llio outset, which was
cle.Dly rellectcd In the cilck nhsoiption of stocks on all slight recessions.
International Mercantile Marine preferred stock, In tho fnco of tho
unofficial announcement that plans calling for tho snle of tho company's
British tonnage and securities of its Kngllsh corporations maintained an
excellent undertone and at the close ot the week held at about tho same
quotations as tltoco of the previous Saturday. It was stotcd that tho
tufting ot tills slock had been excellent and nppaieut attempts by the
bear clement to raid tho Issue failed to accomplish tho desired lcsults.
Thcio was considerable activity on the part of viitious pool Interests,
several Issues that are said to bo manipulated lit this manner showing
spurts from day to day. U the close of tho week there was considerable
bullish talk regarding Distillers Securities stock, which closed somewhat
higher than tho prevailing level ot a week ago. and thcro was, recorded
a considerable turnover In tho Issue. Mexican Petroleum was another
stocks Iti which thcro occurred a fairly wldo'rango of quotations, and It
was learned from authoritative sources that there are Important develop
ments under way.
This company In 1017 earned approximately 23 per cent on Its out
standing common stock, heforo allowing for lncomo tax deductions. Its
sales of oil and distillate In December were larger than lit nny other sin
gle month In the history ot the company by more than $1,000,000
Waiting for U. S. Steel Meeting
United States Steel common was another featuio und thero wus much
speculation in "Wall succt circles as to tho probahlo action by the direc
tors nt Tuesdays meeting of the board with legard to tho dividend on
this stock. The Impression most general In high banking cluics was
thu't the rato would be unchanged nt this time, although, as Is usually the
case, no ono possessed any definite Information lu this lespect. It Is
well known that tho corpotatlon's earnings nro large, EUluclcntly so as
to permit a continuance ot tho curtent disbursements, but whether such
action would bo tegarded as politic by tho management could not bo
ascertained. '
Topper stocks woo model .itcly active during tho week, although
pilco changes wcro confined within narrow limits. Thero wero rumors ot
a consolidation ot four of tho large copper concerns, but In quarters con
versant with the affairs of these companies tho statement was mado
that no basis existed for such reports. On tho basis of current qmtn
tlons for tho metal, it Is asserted tho present level ot market ptlccs foi
tho copper Issues Is most atti active.

Railroad Issues wcro unusually quiet und pilLe changes Insignificant
ns com pat ed with thoso obtaining last week. It was regarded us a cer
tainty tint no material fluctuations in theso sccutltlcs would tnko place
until more dclinlto information is available as to tho proposed new
legislation affecting the tallro.uls which is now pending In "Washington.
At tho close ot the week tho feeling In tho best, hanking quarters was
of tho most bullish character. The war rec.u,hemcnts, especially In the
way of taxes, have created a falso position In the market for tho two Issues
of Liberty Donds. Iiccause of tax exemption, tho 34 have, ranged above
98, wlillo the 4 per cent bonds havo sold down to 9C. "With tho coming ot
peaco mid, the temovnl of necessity for extreme taxation on Incomes
this position would be changed, and it is to be expected that beforo long
the market positions will bo i oversell
I'caco talk grew In considerable proportions during the week, and
thcio now appears to be a general Impression throughout tho financial
community that peace Is much nearer at hand than has been gcneially
realized. Tn that event stock market as well as bond market quotations
should advance substantially.
