of Philadelphia
NUW YOI1K. Jan. 21.
The Stock Uxcliango was almost dark at tho opening today, and
wlillo tho members wore overcoats, sweaters and here and there a hat.
tho temperature on tho floor registered more than sixty degrees. There
was only ono elevator In operation In the building and that was hard
to And.
The market position wag not Influenced by tho contraction of trade
facilities In nccordanco with the order of the fuel administrator. Tho
most Important difference In conditions to those usually prevailing was the
absence of trading efforts by tho professional element on tho floor.
Tho two stocks directly concerned In Mexican affairs wero tho most
prominent features, American Smelting advancing 1H to S3i, and thera
was continued accumulation of Mexican I'etroleum, which roso IT to 91?.
United States Steel moved up " to 91V4, and Bethlehem Steel "1J"
roso ?. to 75i. Marino preferred, after advancing l.i to 90, yielded to
8S?4.
Later thcro was a tendency to Irregularity, with business very small.
The cashiers' section of the association of Stock Kxchango firms has
Issued tho following request: "On account of tho limited elevator serv
ice being rendered by various buildings in tho Wall street district it Is
requested thnt all cashiers make deliveries ns early as possible, and
liavo all checks ready to bo Issued for securities delivered as soon as they
ore received, thus limiting the number of times messengers would
hnve to call nt tho some ottlccs."
