Although the general HUgpensIon of Industrial activity as a result of
Fuel Administrator Garfield's order, naturally, had n restricting lnlluenco
on stock market trading, many Issues wcro In good demand In today's
short session, with urgent buying from the opening In nearly all the
petroleum shares.
This demand lias been stcadllj growing since the announcement was
made that thero will bo no nrbltmr prlc fixing by tho Government, and
a feature of tho dealings In those slocks wus the evident accumulation,
not only by speculative Interests here, but by representatives of foreign
cupltnl. Mexican Petroleum whs strong again, ranging during tho first
hour fiom 89'i to 90V4. and the California Petroleum shales were un
usually prominent, the common ndanclng mole than 1 point to IG',4,
and tho preferred moving up 3 points to 43.
Tho greatest gain In this group was mado In Iloynt Dutch, which
ndvanced 3i to 78. A number of specialties were ulso active and
strong, with Wilson & Co., after selling at 83. advancing to C8 In a few
minutes.
' United States Steel was under pressure ut tho opentng, declining to
I S9H, but rose 1 point before tho end of tho first hour and similar nil
anccs, after Initial declines, wcro noted in Ucthlehem Steel "R" and
other steel Industrials.
American Smelting also showed Increased activity and u strong tone,
moving up from 81 to S3, t'tiili Cupper and Anaconda both made gains
of about 1 point V
The bond murkit was fiiil active, with continued heaw dealings
in Libertj 4s, which sold from U6.1 1 to S8.12.

Tho Consolidated Exchange announced that deliveries would ho mado
