DINGY OIL PAINTINGS
PROVED VALUABLE
One Picture of Saint Lost, Other
Found in Attic of
Devon Inn
When the ltev. John Beiiglass. Baptist
eletffjiiian and a diaplaln In the United
States navy, was sailing to the principal
ports of the world he was commissioned by
Mr. James S. Swatu, thin a resident or
Queen Lane, to ptoi'uio for hlni any pieces
of art work that In Ids Judgment had bpeclal
merit, the chaplain being a widely known art
ciltlc and having written descriptions of
vailous works of urt for several periodicals.
In liTC he sent to Mr. Swart two dingy,
faded oil paintings which he thought of
value. These hung in the leoeption loom
of Mr. Swartz's homo In Queen I.ano until
1887, when they weie sent to the home of
his cousin, Miss Mury Simmons, lu this
clt). and later weie taken by her to Devon

side of tho door leading to her private

Simmon.s's death
One of the pictures Is a pot trail of St.
James the Les.s, who, according to tradition,
was killed with a club, and If the print were
not so Indistinct tho club could be seen. It
Is b) this Inslgne that th.i picture Is desig
nated. This plctuie was recently found
stored lu the utile of Devon Inn. Tho
(oinpatlson print Is missing. It represented
St. Simon. Ho holds a saw because It was
the Instrument by which he Is said to have
been put to death.
The portrait of St. James the Less, 27 b)
31 Inches, was found by Mr. J. Clifton
Buck while making a tour of Investigation
of the Inn with a number of friends at tho
time of the leopenlng of the place as a
school. Mr. Buck took the print to Mr.
Benedict A. Osmls, an uitlsl of this city.
The picture has evidently been cut from a
large canvas. It now ndotns the otllee of
Mr. Francis R. Lowell, president of Devon
Manor, to whom Artist niuls said- "The
painting was partly ruined when It was cut
from the large canvas. There aie marks
which Indlcato that attempts weie made
to restore It. This does not. however, hide
the great work, which Is without doubt the
work of a great master In the early part
of the eighteenth centur). Such a paint
ing surely was part of a canvas which
adorned a cathedral. It Is Intenbely le
llglous lu Its shades. Not only Is It ex
quisitely painted, but the ilch colors and
splendid background murk It as the work
of ono of the world's greutest masters. The
Titian Influence Is marked und even the
texture of the canvas shows the ago and
quality of tho painting. I believe this Is
the best piece of art ever dlscuveted In
Philadelphia."

knitted HI tides and hospital supplies, de
cided to devote Monday as well as Thurs
day to the carrying on of this splendid work.
There aro about 200 women belonging to
this society nnd the amount of work they
accomplish every week Is r,emaikablc. An
appeal has been pent out by them for second
Jiand clothing, preferably woolen garments,
such ns coats, shawl", stockings, etc. Fam
ilies going South for the winter might be
glad to dispose of superfluous winter cloth
ing in this way, and thereby make hundreds
of men. women and little children warm and
comfortable.
