TILL no one spoke. The Countess

her nervousness j sho stood haughtily,
her head held high. Hut like most

It was Number Seven who, during the
hour that followed, spoke for the others.
None moved, or but slightly. There

I In Lausanne ono hardly dares make a
new uciiualntanco without first ascertain
ing the life history of the person In
question.
Brewter and I had a lively time
during the three weeks wo Bpent waiting
for accommodation In the hospital. Wo
eventually got to know tho dangerous
characters by sight and carefully avoid
ed being brought into touch with them.
However, wo did make the acquaintance
Lot many charmlig people chiefly Ameri
can and Swiss ana wero snown great
hospitality.
Tho day after we were admitted to
tne hospital I had a sudden attack of
appendicitis, and was nt onco operated
upon. I thanked my lucky stars that
I was not still In Germany, for complica
tions set ln and a second operation was
necessary. Skillful medical attention
and careful nursing pulled me through
a critical stage.
Brewster had the operation on his leg
and we shared a private ward. We were
the first English officers that had ever
been In that hospital and attracted, for
that reason, a considerable amount of
attention. Our room was continually
filled with flowers, and we had numer
ous visits from our acquaintances, who
showered us with "gifts. One motherly
Swiss lady kept us- supplied with home
made Jelly.
We saw a good deal of several French
officers who had come there to hae the
mistakes of tho German doctors rectified.
One of these hid a most trying time.
His thighbone had been shattered, and
after months ln plaster the bone had
finally knitted. One day he was being
carried downstairs by some German or-
erlies who dropped him and broke his
lee again. After several months more
of igony the bone finally knitted, but
in such a manner that tne joint rormea
almost a right angle. His leg was very
I much shorter and virtually useless. In
the hospital In Lausanne the bone had
to be broken again, ,a pin put through
the knee, weights w'ere tttached to It
and the poor fel'ow had again to endure
sleepless weeks of torture In an endeavor
to finally overcome the results of mora
than a year of careless treatment
While sitting around a coiy wood fire
and entertaining our friends it after
noon Ira we often contrasted our life
there with the months spent In German
hospitals. It was a wonderful thing
to be again among sympathetic people.
After six weeks I was discharged
from hospital, the operation on my
irm being postponed until I was
stronger. About a month later Brewster
'oined me at (he little hotel on the shore
of Lake Geneva, where I had taken up
my abode- We registered at the univer
