J. Tou know, tho Main Line branch has Just

E HUMAN beings nro funny things,
aren't we? Wo fuis and fume, and
f when we hear tho Metropolitan Is going to
V give "I'aust" or "I'agllacci wo say, "Kor
i goodness sake, why on earth don't they
gHe us ono of tho new operas hero?" And
' then when they give us a magnificent per
i formanee In point of real music nnd cc-
qulslto Hccnery, such ns Liszt's "St. Eliza
I belli" last night, because It's nil beautiful
I and puro and high, and there's no special
t plot nnd no hectic loo scenes, we don't
i Uko It. .Still I do think tho audience did
j appreciato tho tableaux, but I doubt. From
'tho general attitude of the house, which
. clapped and applauded through one of tho
mot beautiful bits of orchestration, be
. ttveen tho third nnd fourth tableaux, nnd
i was only stopped by the hissing of tho
$ Opera Club, It "St. Elizabeth" will bo wel-
; corned hero again. Tney can taiK an tney
f llko about wanting new things, but they
want tlio old ones tnoy Know oy neart anu
J that havo regular tunes.
Some of tho boxes wcro empty last night,
but many of the regular operagocrs were
there. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Cnner, Jr.,
' were with tho Hamilton Colkets Uytendalo
looking extremely well In n crimson frock.
Edith Wayno Rldgway Mso wore an old
shade of crimson velvet nnd tulle, which
was perfectly lovely nnd wonderfully be
coming. Mrs. George Dallas Dixon, who
was In the Stotesbury bov, wore a gown
of bright green satin nnd a black paradlso
In her hair. Mrs. Georgo Tales Baker wore
handsome gown of black, nnd Mrs. Madi
son Taylor, who was In the Baker's box,
was In gray.
There wcro soldiers nnd naval olllcers,
marines and reserves scatteied through
tho audlenco as usual, and though every
single scat was not filled, It was what might
be called n decidedly brilliant houso.
ONE of our worthy war works Is being
undertaken by the Order of tho lted
Star. And It Is a decidedly practical as
well as sentlmontal one, Tho Order of
the Bed Star Is a companion philanthropy
to tho Bed Cross, but Its helpfulness Is
directed to the succor of tho dumb beasts
which servo our nrmlcs In war. Tho local
' branch of tho order Is planning a dog show
for Saturday afternoon and evening of
this week In the Roso Garden of tho Belle
vue Stratford. Proceeds will bo for ths
L benefit of a fund to purchaso an am
v hulance for the war zone to caro for battle.
' strlckea animals. Philadelphia Inter
ested In tho work of tho S. P. C. A. will
naturally desire to aid in the good work of
? relieving tho suffering of man's dumb her
vltors and friends. For wo must not forget
the services of tho faithful horses and dogs
of the war zone. The little Bed Cross dog,
who hunts the living among tho dead and
tho horse who bears his rider Into tho
midst of tho smoko and shell of battle.
Should wo refuse to help them? I think
not, indeed,
