NEXT Monday evening n unlriuo and In teresting concert will bo given nt tho League Island Navy Yard, Under the leadership of Miss Martha Barry a chorus of seventy women, composed of tho chorus of tho Women's Club of Swarthmore, tho New Century Chorus and tho chorus of Presbyterian deaconesses, will bring much pleasure to their sailor audlenco by their well-chosen selections. Assisting this largo chores will bo two small ones mado up of tho following girls, who will glvo a bit of frivolity to tho 'pro gram by singing several of tho popular song lilts. In ono group will bo Helen Dando, Eleanor McCawlcy, Mrs. Dancn baum, Miss Champion, Mrs. Hiram Eltason and Miss Potter. In tho other group will be. Dorothy Fagan, Sldnoy Lear, Gcorglana PHfleJd, Dorothy Dlnsmoro, Helen Pltfleld, and Margaretta Dixon. Mrs. Arthur La Roche, Mrs. Thaw Mlllington nnd Mr. Glen Staples will bo soloists. Mrs. Mlllington you'll remember as Miss Elizabeth McClos key; sho Is going to sing u numbor of French songs. Mr. Staples, who Is a distinguished con cert singer from Chicago, enlisted last spring In tho Radio School at Leaguo .Island before completing tho course at Har vard. His volco and singing havo great charm and will add much to tho evening's enjoyment. IT'S a funny thing when jou go to tho opera all keyed up to enjoy It, as In tho caso of "Faust" last week, you're apt 'to got disappointed; and when you go to ono such as tho "Daughter of tho Heginient," you ex pect a fairly pleasant evening and you aro surprised to hear Hempcl In perfect volco, Scottl a. marvel as Sulplclo, und from Donizetti's llttlo breath of tunefulness an almost perfect performance, for they wero all at their best. There wcro not as many In nttendanco last night, and it Is a funny thing to mo that somo Americans can't stand quiet during tho playing of ono stanza of tho national air. All through tho audlenco oflkcrs were standing at salute, and In tho grand tier tho women stood liko statues in their colorful gowns, but In tho orchestra there were some who had to talk the enduring time nnd remark the officers at salute. And there was one woman who Insisted on alnglnffi or rather thinking sho was singing all through tho soprano parts, thereby almost .polling Hempel's cxqulslto work. What I think .other! 1 ! ! ! Flo Rlvlnus was In tho 'Van nensselacr box looking very smart with his newly acquired stripes; the Stotesburys had an English officer with them and a real United States captain on crutches was In ono of tho boxes also. Mrs. Charles Coxo knitted Industriously nil through tho per formance. Margot Scull Blddlo looked very well In a pale pink frock and Frances Gamblo had her hair arranged In tho most wonder ful way. Sho and Eleanor both looked per fectly stunning. Tho DeWltt Cuylers had the Dick Elliots and Sydney Keiths in their box. and Mrs. Craig Biddle, looking, llko a iucen, was In tho Diesel box. There was ono moment In tho perform ance when the matter o( factness of a cer tain young woman of .quality camo out to the full, though no ono would havo suspect ed her of such "goings on" at homo. Two lackeys came on tho stage to light tho chandeliers during tho last act, and the lights refused to light. "Good night," whispered tho small person; "somebody for got to put a quarter in tho slot." WITH most of tho parties called oft this year It was good to go to the opening dance of tho three which aro to bo given by Mrs. Edward Troth at tho Germantown Cricket Club. Itcally, I don't know of any dancing class that is moropopular than ' Mrs. Troth's, and I'm go glad sho decided - to keep up threo meetings anyhow. It's such a relaxation to get away for twd or three nights In tbo year from tho sorrows and sufferings of tho world. It makes one more ready to help and sympathlzo after a little recreation. Such u crowd as thcro was on Saturday ntghtl You never haw so many! Uniforms to front of you, uniforms to ' left of you, uniforms to right of you and on danced tho six hundred! It really was qulto thrilling, and tho variety of uniforms tended to keep them from becoming mo notonous, If such could possibly bo the case. Of course, tho class Is always great .fun, but everybody seemed to bo having a , particularly good time tho other evening, r perhaps because It was tho first real danco : they had -been to for omo time'. THEY only announced their engagement a few months ago and, of course, sho ' was collecting for her trousseau, and cen terploccs and linen of any kind wherever displayed were; Irresistible, so when last Iwcek Elsie and' Fiance were walking homo Sfrom tJie movies, unfortunately for Fiance . tney naa 10 pass a inncy-wortc snop, wiin 5 windows crowded with trousseau stuff r-upst tnwcls. ilollkr. tea nunkltis und "all "that sort of thing," as Hector MucQuurrlo feays. Fiance, walking briskly along, watch- flng the sUppcry pavement, discovered that he was no longer accompanied, and, turning ; around,-saw her standing before tho win 'dow, twisting her head In a vain ondeavor to follow tho courso of a Una of embroidery on a centerpiece' Not being interested In that. Fiance looked over the rest of, tho dls-' blay. and realized and remarked, "Elsie, this Is no window' for you to stund In front ti WlthiPie.',' Tearing herself nwayreuc- ttaUyrJUsi Jlstonofto His explanation ot ulku.
