Ni:V VOltlv, Dec. 11.
There was a geneial crumbling away of sccmlly value on tho Stoclc
Kchaneo at Intervals durlns tho day, ttltli tho Street belnu called on
to witness breaks of 5 to 10 points as a natural Incident to tlio present
market condition-!. These lossei, however, were In high priced Issues,

market values moving In lino with tho standard and more popular stocks.
American Tobacco, which dropped more than :0 points jesterdaj,
sustained a further loss of 10 points todi, telling In tho Into afternoon
at 130, and breaks of 5 points or mom were recorded In 1'ullman, Liggett
& M:crs, Sears, Itoebuck &. Co, nnd IndUFttljl Alcohol. Thcso recessions
were followed at times by liquidation of many lowtr-prlccd stocks, with
a good deal of Interest attached to tho trading In Distillers Securities,
which declined more than 3 points to 29.
Group by group was taken up In tho late afternoon, when nearly
all the railroad Issues were under Increased pressure and In some cases

tho mocment of 83'i, and llethkhem Steel "11' declined about 3 points to

Bethlehem Steel's Request for Advance of Funds
IJethlohcm Still's retiur-t thnt Washington advaneo funds against
contracts N due to tho fallnto of Washington llterall to llo ly to the full
wording of Its original ugieement with the steil proiluceis. When a con
tractor builds ti liouso ho optcts pamenta at stipulated Intcrwils so a,
to sao him from cmbanassment, and under piocnt conditions tho eticl
companies should reccle thn same treatment. Doubtless they will.
On the score of prlce-fl.lnp, it Is thought that many unnects-'aiy fears
are being entertained, for it is known thnt the rn-sldent and li's
aditors nro auIotis to aold doing anj thing that will lntcifiro with
capacity production.
It lan bo said on good authoilt ttiat the President his no Immi'dialo
Intention of taking onr tho railroads and i mining thetn. The r-poits to
tho iffcct that he had decided to do so that hac conto out of Wishlngton
hio been inspired by Intel csts tint fi.i tcxeral months hae been -on-ducting
a lgorous propaganda against the railroads.
Tho suggestion by tho lallroad presidents that tho railroads l.o
allowed to operate as at pr -ent for another slsty daja Is likely to rvcclo
serious colilderatlon, as It was the piomlscuoiis distributions of priority
oidcrs by tho Gowrnmcnt that was In 1 irgo measure responsible for tho
tangled situation now obtaining Keports from tho icntcrs of greatest
i-ongestiou aro that conditions uro being rapidly lmprotd.
What Is worrjlug the holders of Amcikan Tobaico common stock is
this: If tho company Issues any blable amount of tho '11' common
htock that will be authorized in January, will It earn Its keep? In other
word, wm the new money permit of the maintenance of 20 per cent on a
btot.lv that has been Increased in tho amount outstanding by, say, 20 or SO
per icnt. While earnings for tho jiar will show !mprocmcnt. It is nccr.
theloss questionable whither at that rate they could support, s-ay, JCfi.OOO
000 or $75,000,000 of 20 pir cent common stock. Tills perhaps explains
tho li per cent jleld on tho stock.
Uy switching from Illinois Central into Atchison common block the
holder can tccuro a better investment nt a saving of about S points capital
in ested and improve the leld by nearly three-quarters of l per cent. Tho
extra dividend declared on Illinois Central and paid on December 1 Is
partly responslblo for tho premium tho ono enjojs over tho other. Tho
fact that Illinois Central earnings hao Increased whllo those of tho
Atchison hao decreased somewhat may be dismissed as a factor In view
of the $38,000,000 cash account of tho latter.
i Lowest Prices and Highest Yields of Generation
I Investors today can buy prcfeired stoiks at tho lowest prices and
highest Jlelds In a generation. Of a list of twenty-six such Issues tho
average jlcld Is 7.77 per cent. Tho majority Ield close to S per cent and
a number of good stocks, sJ and 9 per cent. There aro a few that ono
ml"ht icgailtas good speculative Investments that are selling to net tho
Investor 10 per cent, rrcfened stocks leldlng less than 7 per cent aio
i becoming a rarity.

Local Bid and Asked
William Cramp certlncntft attracted
nearly all attention In the quiet
trading on the Philadelphia Btcck Ex
change today, while the turnover of
other shares was exceptional light nnd
prices generally were lower. It has been
a long lime since Cramp has demon
strated such ttrength and the unusual
demitid was the cause of much comment
In the financial district and In brokers'
board rooms. On the first rale tho
price advanced 24 points to 7011. Inter
200 shares changed hands at 71 and
Ihefe transactions were followed by Btlll
further gains until the valtio had soared
to 73 V4. a gain of more than 5 points.
ine buying was largely by two local
houaes, and, while nothing definite coulq
be learned as to the cause of the de
mand, It was learned from a prominent
brokerage firm that tha belief prevailed
that expectations of somo kind of a
speelal extra dividend were responsible
Kollowlrg midday the certificates bc-
cime quiet, and some of the gain was
lost.
ltallroad shares followed the trend
in New York, reslsterlns: declines all
along the line. Pennsylvania shores rold
on as mucn as half a point, to 44, a new
than 2i points West Jersey and Sea
shore dropped a half, Lehigh Valley
full point and Baltimore and Ohio a
fraction.
Philadelphia Illectrlc. Hlectrlc Storage
Mattery and Uapld Transit, certificates
changed hands at Jieterday's closing
quotltlons, and United Oas Improvement
was a llttlo lower. Touopah lielmont
showed a fair amount of activity and
wns off a trifle, l.ehlch Navigation de
clined a quarter
Steel common was not hcIIvs, but was
lower tnot of tho day and declined near
ly two points near the close. One share
of American Oas came out at 00, up
three points.
Liberty Bonds were Irregular, the 3Hi
selling unchanged, at 91 20, and the
4s declined to 97 30.
Further Increases In earnings were
shown by the Kej stone Telephone state
ment for November and eleven months
which came out today. For the month
the gross was 1131,845, as compared
with 1125.034 In November. 191C. and
