LUNCHEON MLLOWEtf
'Armenian Benefit Meeting at Scottish Rite Hall.
Bazaar at Suffrage Headquarters During the
Week Red Cross News
THERE: ore ciulte a few things dolnj; to
night, and there were yostrt1r.y, too, for
that matter. There's to be the big meet
In? for the Armenians this cvonlnir at
Scottish .Illto Halt and the I'cnn Charter
play at the Beltevuc-Strntfor.l. And then
last night there was the big rally of the
National League for Women's Service at
the Academy of Music nml there wns the
Junior League luncheon at tho Acorn Club.
at which Mr. Krancls Hnckett, of the New
Republic, talked on the "Oppressed Kng
Hah." Altogether, It's been almost as busy
a week as If one had had a ball to gn to
vary night Instead of some Interesting talk
or bit of music.
DID It ever occur to you what a learned
generation ours will be, especially now
that we have cut down so much on dances
and other ways of entertaining? We learn
something new every day nnd hear the old
things dressed up In new clothes, and wo
hear one man's theo'rles and another man's
proved stories, and now and again In be
tween wo hear some woman who has u
message for us, until we nil will be so full
of knowledge I hope we won't burst.
DID you know they arc having a sale
all day and well, no, not all night,
but part of the evening at the suffrage
headquarters, 1721 Chestnut street? I
think they speak of It as a bag sale, but
goodness knows they have about every
thing else but tho kitchen stove, bo far ns
I can see. It opened on Wednesday and
will keep up until tomorrow evening. They
have clothes, pictures. Jewelry, books, an
tiques, old silver, afternoon tea and all the
other things which go to make up a suc
cessful sale. It's worth going to, really,
and It's under Dr. E. M. Hlestand Moore,
who Is chairman of the Ambulance Aid of
the Woman Suffrage party.
Mrs. George Dunning, you know, Is gen
eral chairman of the Woman Suffrage
party and she Is Interested in the bazaar,
as are a number of other women who go
regularly to tho Chestnut street head
quarters. AT THE Armenian meeting tonight at
XI Scottish Kite Hall the committee of
men and the women's committee of tho
Emergency Aid will both be represented.
Bishop Tlhlnelander will mnko the opening
address he Is the head of the men. you
know and Mrs. George Horace Lorlmer
will tell something of her committee's
work. There will be music and the Honor
able A. J. I.ClkiiH, American Ambassador
to Constantinople, will speak.
AMONG the auxiliaries looking forward
most eagerly to the lied Cross drive
for membership the week of December 17
Is Auxiliary No. 324, which meets every
Friday afternoon In the parish house of
the Chapel of tho Holy CoTimunlon, at
Twenty-seventh and Wharton streets, from
1 to 5 o'clock.
Tho auxiliary started last July as Group
No. 2 of Auxiliary No. 47, but grew so
rapidly that two weeks ago It became a
separate unit. Out of a membership of
sixty there Is nn average attendance of
forty-Aye, ,who already have made and sent
in forty-two shoulder capes, seventeen
pairs qfbed socks, fifteen pairs of pajamas,
twenty-six hospital shirts and 159 towels,
while they have knit Ave sweaters, nine
pairs of socks, Ave pairs of wristlets and
nine trench washcloths.
Plans are being made to have various
speakers during the winter who will tell
of their experiences In Red Cross work.
This afternoon Mrs. Walter Fox will tell
'of her work at the Hopltal Jardln Colo
nial, near Paris.
Mrs. Frank Williamson, of 2302 Spruce
street, Is chairman of the auxiliary, and
Mrs. Thomas Harvey Is chairman of the
new membership committee.
AND two more engagements to be talked
.about! Did you 'ever know anything
like the number of them these days? Mar
garet Burton and Cowan Bain and Mar
Jorle Wlllcox and Alberto Santa Maria.
They are very nice ones, too. I am sure
you'll agree with me on this matter.
Margaret Burton is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. George Burton, you know. Her
mother was Margaret Handy, a very popu
lar belle In her debutante years. Cowan
Bain is a son of the late Frederick Bain,
a well-known broker, who married Miss
Charlotte Mock, of Salisbury, N. C. Mrs.
Bain lives at 221 I'lne street with her
daughter Charlotte. Cowan Is In the avia
tion corps of the United States army nnd
Is stationed at Princeton.
Marjorle Wlllcox is the daughter of Mr.
,and Mrs. James Wlllcox, bf Wawa, and a
sister of Mark WJIlcox, who married Mar
garet Keating about ten years ago. Her
fiance, Alberto Santa Maria, ca:.ie here
from Cuba to attend college and later en
gaged In the automobile business with
Bruder Diddle. Several months ago he
Joined the Imperial Royal Flying Corps
and has been commissioned a lieutenant.
His mother was -Miss Ma'rle Lalne, a sister
of Dr. Dama Lalne, her mother having
been a Miss Oaresche. It Is an odd thing
,that through the Gareschetf the Lalno and
the Keating family are related, Mrs. .Santa
Maria being a cousin of Mrs. Mason Lisle,
who was Miss Mary Keating. The Santa
Marias now live at Ardmore.
There Is no talk yet of a marriage late
In either engagement, but 'ho can tell
these days7
IT WAS a dismal, rainy afternoon, and
Mrs. S had nothing to do; but that
ras only part of the trouble. The real ache
was caused by the fact that she had no
word from Bob the apple of her eye for
whom she bravely flaunted a service flag
since he had left her several weeks before.
She had been very proud of him In his
uniform and had thrilled at the news of
hli promotion at camp; but now tho un
certainty of his whereabouts was driving
her wild. And bo on that rainy afternoon
ahe picked up her knitting and started for
a motion-picture show In the hope of a
little diversion.
' The pictures were good and a little fat
man In one of them had done much to
help Mrs. 8 ou,t of the blues, for she even
.found herself chuckllngsa little; but the
araedy ended and Pathe News was flashed
'' the oren. Thiawaa generally Interest-
pHf, iMit toiaym waa war, war, var. and
"American troops In England reviewed
by King George," rend the headlines.
Yes. there they were: all those nice big
American boys. Hut who was that? It
couldn't be? Hut It wasl '
"Hob!" said Mrs. 8 out loud, much" to
the amazement of the gentleman In tho
next seat. "Oh. It Is!"
The picture faded, but Mrs. 8 sat there
filled with conflicting emotions. Joy that
she knew at Inst where he was; fear be
cause he wns so far away, nnd pride, for
was ho hot representing AmoMca to the
King of England? NANCY WYNNE.
