NOVELTY IN FRENCH HANDS
Every band attached to a Trench regi
ment has In addition to specified military
band instrments, a ' fanfare" of trumpets
These take up the refrain at stated Intervals
hlle the rest of the band remains silent;
and they begin with an Indescribable nour
ish of their instruments, raising them to
the Up with a quick concerted movement
and lowering them to tho sldo In equal
rhythm as tho band proper takes up the
air
With the single exception of the marines,
no American army or navy band follows
this custom, one full of Interest quite apart
from the muslo Itself. Tho other day I
happened Into the marine camp whero tho
colonel and the threo majors of a certain
rejlment are my friends Just us I ar
rived the band was beginning tho usual
afternoon concert in tho public squiro of
the town.
The trumpeters stood rlgldlv as If on pa
rade, their trumpets at their sides And
from each hung a small square fanlon,
upon which were embroidered tho colors
ff the regiment. With the trumpets at the
Up, these fanlons hung straight and nlmost
rlsld as the muslcluns plaved And then
In the flourish that I hac'not described be
cause It Is quite Indescribable, they hung
limp as the Instruments were brought down
In quick moemcnt, whllo tho music con
tinued from tho band proper.
"Why, that's a French stunt jou have
wpled, isn't It, major?" I said to an oHlcer
' French stunt nothing !" ho replied "We
old that years ago In this outfit! We are
the only branch of American military serv
ice that did It long before this war. and
uiat continues It still. I have been kept
wsy explaining that fact to a number of
rnch ofllcers and people who have ex-presse-a
surprise at tho knowledge. I havo
'wd them never to be surprised at the ma
