A Few Bright Words for Motors
A few bright words for tho motors. President Krsklne, of the Studebakcr,
estimates earnings for the fiscal year nt least $17 a share nfter full allowance
for depreciation and tho war tnx. This suggests that tho present 4 per rent
dividend is safe. He says, also, that tho asset vnluo of the slock is about $100
n share, and that tho compuny today could liquidate- Us business, pay off tho
entire floating debt and have a sufllclent remainder left to pay the shareholders
doublo tho present quotation.
Chandler Motor In declaring tho usual extra dividend of 1 per cent, In
nddltion to tho quarterly payment of 2 per cent, estimates earnings for tho year
of closo to $3." a share. In ten months tho amount earned before the war tax
was $32 a share.
Tho otllclal estimate is that the war tax will cost the company $9.50 a share
nnd that tho remainder for tho year will bo $12 to $13 a sharo. It Is stated
further that tho corripany has sufllclent supplies, paid for, to maintain produc
tion throughout tho year 1918.
Consoling Words on Willys-Overland
Willys-Overland Is nnothcr regarding which a few consoling words can
bo said. It Is now down to the prewar level and on about a 20 per cent basis.
At tho current market tho stock would appear to havo discounted tho worst
possible, even a reduction In the dividend. Its financial structure was not
damaged during tho exploitation period by loose methods. On n 10 per cent
basis, tho preferred can bo recommended to tho business man as a fairly good
typo of Investment.
Steel T.rade More Active
Several leading steel Interests report a slight Increase In activity in some
brandies of the trade, notably the structural market where a few fair-sized,
orders have been placed during tho Inst week. It is understood that the bulk of
approximately 20,000 tons of structural steel purchased within tho last few
days went to tho American Bridge Company.
It would appear from the incteased demand that regular consumers nro
showing more Interest In market affairs slnco prices have been fixed. It Is noted,
too, that pig Iron demand Is reviving, a largo contract for export having been
placed n few days ago with one company, while some good inquiries have been
gidng tho rounds, tho largest from tho Pennsylvania Hallroad, for about 12,000
tons of foundry, chnrcoal and other grades. There Is a better demand for plates
from sources asldo from tho Government, mainly for export.
