Tho stock market was feverish and unsettled nil through the enrly trading,
when many Issues mistaliicd losnen ranging from 6 to 7 points, and for a time It
seemed as If there could bo no check to the constant crumbling away of values.
No one seemed to have a clear Idea ns to why tho markot should start on the
downward grade today, as all the various factors In tho situation seemed to
favor tho bulls. There was nothing in the over-Sunday news to caime any In
creased uneasiness, and the banking situation showed no essential cnango, money
continuing fairly easy, and although the assumption was general that loans
had been disturbed, a canvass of tho Street during tho day brought no confirma
tion of this view.
The selling seemed to come from all over tho country and. although the bears
aie In bad standing with the governors, there was plenty of evidence that efforts
of tho bear had a good deal to do with causing prices to make iolent declines.
Tho depleted resources of many Wall stteet operators may lmvo had a good
deal to do with tho pressure of stocks on the market and the obsence of demand
when offers were made. Among the price movements was a drop of 7 points In
American Can, to 30, followed by a rally to 33, and many other Industrials sold
off 3 to 7 points.
St. Paul dropped 4 points to 38, and Heading dropped 5V4 points to GO',4.
United States Steel common, which was traded In on a large scale, sold off 4
points to 90T4, and the copper stocks In some cases yielded to tho lowest prices
reached by them In a long period.
There was moro attention paid to the trading In the Liberty 3',iH than to
anything elsoln tho bond market. Those bonds ranged from 09.70 to 99.60. selling
down to tho new low record for the full bonds.
Declining Market No Respecter of Values
Investment values receive little respect In a declining market. Hundreds of
examples could bo given to prove the truth of this assertion. But some of
the most bevere losses have been In preferred stocks In which a speculative follow
ing had been created. One of those -Is Willys-Overland preferred, which little more
than a year ago was rushed up to the vicinity of 117 on the strength of Its pros
pective redemption, or perhaps exchange Into new stock under the terms of the
proposed "American Motors" merger, which never got beyond the paper stage.
It Is now down forty points.
LARGE DECLINES OCCUR IN MANY
STOCKS ON NEW YORK CURB MARKET
New Low Records Made in Several Issues, Buyers Being
Scarce Even at Substantial Concessions.

Values crumbled away rapidly In many itocks traded in on the Ilroad Street
Curb, with new low records made In several Issues before noon. A large part of
the selling on the violent declines came from Stock Exchunge houses and rep
resented forced liquidation of accounts in which stocks had been carried. Buyers
were scarce even ut substantial concessions.
Submarine Boat was u prominent. fcatuie. opening at 13VJ and declining to
the new low of 11. Aetna, dropped from 6Bi to 5, and Air Reduction sold down
to 70.
Curtlss Aeroplane sold down from -7 to 24, and Wright-Mat ttn was traded In
at 7 to C. The motort were wlthiut tupport, Chevrolet dropping from 68 to
tho new low of 58, and United sold nt 18'.4 to 17',. ,
Interlube sold nt 3 to 3 and United States Shipbuilding at 3i. Independent
oils were weak. Midwest Refining dropped fom 119 to 106; Mcrrlt from 28 to 24V4:
Houston from 19 to 17, and Cosden sold at 7?j to 7i.
Trading In mining stocks was uulet. with Nixon Nevada selling at 69 to
66 cents; Magma at 3514 to 35; Butte Copper and Zinc at O'J and 6. and Emma
Consolidated at 7-16 and Vi-

It has been a lonsr time since trading- on
the ThlFadelphla Stock Kxchanee reached
the proportions it did today and felnce there
was such a rapid tumbling of values as
the session brought forth. Virtually every
thing on the ,11st sod at materially lower
prices and many of the leaders of the home
list suffered severely. A break was natur
ally to be expected here as a result of
the sharp declines In New York, but every
where In the financial district surprise was
heard because of the falling of values of
the standard local stocks. The belief pre
vailed quite generally, however, that the
losses, outside of the arbitrage Issues, were
unwarranted, and that the selling which
brought nbout the declines was largely due
to frightened speculators, who became .nerv
ous because of the slump on the big board.
