FINANCIAL NEWS-NEW YORK AND PHILADELPHIA STOCK MARKET QUOTATION;
NEW YORK MARKET SHOWS MORE
CHEERFUL TONE ON WAR REPORTS
Marine Preferred Makes Big Gain Steel Declines
After Advancing Early St. Paul Drops
to New Low Record of 42
High Points in Today's Financial News
The Xcto York stock market was more cheerful most of the morning, out
declines occurred near close. War reports had bullish influence. Curb tone was
better, but business teas small. Com was lower. Cotton quiet. Vorcign ex
change dull. JVcio 1'orfc bank statement for the week showed increases in average
and actual loans. Bank clearings throughout the country increased this week
over corresponding week of last year, liar silver lower.
NEW YORK, Nov. 3.
For a time during tho forenoon thcro was a better tono shown in trading on
tho Stock Exchange with prices of n number of Issues making substantial gains
during tho first hour. This reflected a. more cheerful view of tho outlook In""
Europe, the nous from Trnnco being regarded as a bullish factor and more con
fidence was shown In tho Italian situation.
Thcro was only a scant supply of stocks at tho beginning of business, while
n number of Issues wero In good general demand, with Marino picfcrrctl be
coming most prominent, that stock advancing 3i points to 102, nnd United
States Steel common, which continues to determine tho general market tone,
was up V to 97',s. Tho Improvements, howover, was not long maintained In
the Inst half of the forenoon St. Paul became weak, suddenly dropping from
44 to the new" low record of 42s4.
Thcro wns also n renewed pressure against the general list, with United
States Steel common dropping to below OG, nnd Marino preferred losing nearly
nil Us previous gain. Most of the trading was of a professional character.
Tho weakness In tho Into trading In many stocks resulted from selling by
room traders who had been bucrs at tho opening, nnd as far as the Individual
character of tho half-day's operations was concerned tho buying and selling wero
without special significance. It Is tho prevailing belief that tho market outlook
depends almost wholly on war news.
For that reason the speculative element was disposed to refrain from ex
tensive dealings until definite news from tho ncthltlcs In I"ram.e nnd Italy Is
obtained. The money situation has apparently become a little moro tense, tlmo
money being scarce, and banking mnchlnery Is kept In operation for tho purpose
of meeting tho supply for call monej nt tho 4 per cent rate.
Railroad Issues Fail to Recover
Ono of the most significant features of the matlcet since the action taken by
tho Stock Exchange governors to restrict speculation has been the failure
of the better grado of railroad Issues to rccoer. If they wero depressed by the
pirates who have been capitalizing tho unfavorable features of a war situation,
why hao they not recoercd in similar proportion as tho more speculative
Industrials?
Tho answer Is obvious. Theso stocks, while thoy have been under pressure
from tho bears, liavo been supplied principally by Investors who havo seen
allies steadily shrinking and finally hae thrown oerboard their holdings
from ptiro fright.
A list of fifteen issues of the stanchest typo bhows an aerage decline
fcinco tho first of the jcar of close to 30 points. There Is nothing that Is more
disturbing to tho Investor than a steadily declining market. This has been
going, on now for a year nnd In tho last few months has reached a climax.
When preferred stocks declino 5 points dn slnglo sales, tho Individual holder
cannot bo censured because he loses his balance. Stocl; Exchange houses say
tho present situation Is absolutely without parallel. Wealthy speculators who
nro well able to take up their securities have simply been closing out their
marginal accounts.
Tho September statement of the Pittsburgh and West Virginia, which, Inci
dentally, Is tho flrst Itemized report since tho reorganization of the Wabash
rittsburgh Terminal, discloses earnings on tho preferred stock at tho rato ot
21 per cent per annum. Tho stock, Incidentally, Is quoted to yield better than
11 per cent. The management is charging off 3 per cent for equipment de
preciation, which will run into a total of about $150,000 per annum. Tho
operating ratio In six months was about 63 per cent. The company has paid
off all Its teal estate mortgages, has $1,500,000 cash on hand and has subscribed
$500,000 to Liberty Bonds.
Plan to Prevent Wild Rumors
In their campaign against the professional shorts, tho Stock Exchange
officials hao had In mind also the prevention of wild rumors such as have
been circulated by some agencies. Their object primarily was that of creating
apprehension. In some instances there was the most flagrant effort to under,
mine confidence.
In a period when much is mndo of the large taxes being paid by United
States Steel, Crucible Steel nnd New Jersey Zinc, it is consoling to study the
figures of American Steel Foundries. In nino months, after setting aside
$1,600,000 for the war tax, the company earned $21.45 a share for its stock, as
against slightly less than $20 a sharo in 1916. It will bo recalled that on Octo
ber 1 the company retired all of its flrst mortgage 6 per cent bonds.
Where Is the Erie Headed?
Where is the Erie headed? Its September statement Is most disconcert
ing and shows conclusively that assistance In the way of higher freight rates
is imperative. In nine months the road -las lost $5,877,000. Without allowance
for necessary adjustments, the fact remains that this compares with a balance
earned last year over and above Interest charges of $4,631,000. In other words,
Erie has been operating at a deficit. And there is not likely to bo much Im
provement In the latter part of the year, Tho September net decrease was
46 per cent.
