AMERICAN FIELD HEADQUARTERS IN
FRANCE, Oct. 8 (delayed).
The big military tournament, known m
divisional field day, was held yesterday with
Immense success. A big feature was the
presence of Generals Pershing and Slbert
and numerous other American generals,
besides many French offleers. The program
consisted of trench digging, defensive work
and fire, the Sammees lying flat on the
ground under Imaginary machine fire;
storming of trenches with the bayonet,
machine-gun fire, "grenade throwing and
storming attacks In open and close forma
tions. All the phases of modern war were
Illustrated The scene was Inspiring. The
Immense plateau was swept by a strong
wlnUr-Uke wind, but the bright sucihlne
put nctlon and energy Into the work. Tho
earnestness of the Sammees was remark
able. In my opinion they are ready now
to go Into the trenches.
After tha program had been concluded,
the winning units were drawn up before
tho many officers and were addressed by
General Pershing, who Introduced .Con
gressman Medlll McCormlck, of Illinois.
"You represent," said McCormlck, "the
spirit of the United States In your work.
My aim upon my return home will be to
spread tha Information of your magnetic
earnestness, and to make It clear to the
American people how you are carrying on
tha great work of supporting the principles
In which our Government was born. I
shall urge this point In seeking the un
divided encouragement and support of the
American people of your future activities
here." General Pershing then spoke. i am
delighted." he said, "with the fine work
shown by the officers and men of your
division, and particularly with your exhi
bition today, In which you have exemplified
the true fighting attitude. AJways remem
ber that you represent the principles upon
which the United States was founded. The
foes you will meet have been trained for
centuries In warfare, that spirit having
been Imbued in them from birth. Neverthe
less, I am confident from what I saw this
morning that you are their superior, and
that the American 'out-to-wln' spirit as
sures victory" General Pershing then pre
sented the cups to the officers and men of
the winning units. He spoke a few con
