liutte and Superior Copper cut dividend. Foreign exchange dull.
NKW YORK. Sept. 6.
The day's trading on tho Stock Kxchnnso was confused, ndvnnces nnd
declines occurring at tho same time In different Rroupfi, with tho most Important
chances to lower figures. New Haven, tho oldtlmo prime Investment of the
financial world, was without support and was made a target for bear attacks all
through tho day, ranging from 30 down to the new low record of 2"i, AH kinds
of stories wero In circulation, but no other reason was needed to explain the
adjustment In market position other than that It has no dividend prospects In
tho near future and must he classed with Krle, Southern Railway and Missouri
l'aclllc.
Tho soiling of New York Central was not explained from tho tlmo It first
broke below 80. Today It was In continued supply, nnd after a rally to 77A
sold down to tho new low record of 75, a block of C500 changing hands at this
figure. Other rullrond stocks wero naturally Influenced by the manner In whlcl,
New Haven broke.
Union Pacific was strong nt the start, but later dropped about 2 points, and
St. Paul and Reading both showed substantial losses. The Industrials varied
constantly In market tone, with frequent displays of strength nnd weakness in
tho leading steel and coppers. Tho widest range was In C.cnernl Motors, which
dropped from 108 to 102. llutto and Superior was not influenced to any great
extent by the cutting of the dividend rato In half fiom the amount of the June
distribution.
Call money was easy enough, renewing at 4 per cent and lending ns low ns
3?i per cent In the lato afternoon.
Itallrond bonds were heavy, with New York Central debenture 6s selling
down to 98 Vi. Anglo-French Gs nlso sold at concessions, with tho bulk of tho
trading at 03 and 33. Liberty Bonds ranged from 99.04 to 99.80.
