of 1 point or more nt tho end of tho day. The degree of uncertainty varied
with the character of advices from Washington, but with tho market having
to overcome disappointment over tho fact that tho statement yesterday that
Judgo Lovctt had been made chairman of tho Purchasing Commltteo turned
out to bo false, and that thoao who traded In It wero wholly mislead as to the.
composition of that commission.
Although denials wero made that thcro had been a rupture between the
steel masters and tho Government, the wording of the denials was construed
as Indicating acute tension nnd tho fact that adjustment of differences Is nec
essary gave tho bear traders another factor to be used by them In unsettling
values. Tho general Impression prevailed, however, that the larger banking
Interests wero quiet but steady buyers of stocks on all such declines as occurred
today and on tho low lovels which wero rccorJod on Wednesday.

"Interest In the trading on the Broad Street Curb was today concentrated In
tho dealings In Independent oil stocks. There was a vigorous demand for many
of theso Issues nt advancing prices, with speculative Interest most pronounced
in Northwestern Oil, la which thero was a largo volume of business at 87 to
98 cents. Midwest Refining, which closed yesterday at 179, roso to 187, Merrltt
was traded in at 40U to 414, Elk Basin at 1174 to 11 and Oklahoma at 1 to .
Tuxpam Star was active at around 1V4.
Mining shares were generally steady nnd without special change In prices.
Emma Consolidated sold nt 14 and l4. Mason Valley at 7V4 and Consolidated
Arizona at 2. A bid of 2V4 for 60,000 shares is kept standing In tho markot
for, Consolidated Arizona.
The war-order stocks showed a pronounced falling off In public Interest. It
was somo minutes after tho opening when a sale was mado in Wright-Martin
Aircraft and it then ranged from 11 to 12U. Curtlss was weak, dropping
from 48 to 47. Air Reduction again touched Its high record of 99.
Increased lmportanco attached to commercial prospects after tho war
caused continued buying of Evcrett-IIcaney & Co., which roso to tho new high
of 24.
Canadian Government Bs dropped to tho new low of 9C.

Long-time loans on good mixed Stock Ex
change collateral today showed a wide vari
ance at 4V4 per cent bid for flye and six
months and E per cent asked. Money loaned
for four months at 4 per cent for. the
shorter maturities ; sixty-day, money was
quoted at'4',4 per cent, and for ninety days
at tfPiVt per cent.
For the shorter dates there Is little or
no demand on industrial loans. Money Is
quoted at 4H04U per cent for sixty days,
at S per cent for four months 'and at 5
per cent for Ave and six months.- These
rates average about per cent higher than
the maximum of last week.
Bank acceptances quoted at SU and 3
per c:nt for eligible and 4 and 3 per
cent on Inellglblea.
