LONDON, Aur. 1. Good war news made
sentiment cheerful on the Stock Exchange
today, nlthoURh huslness was not brisk.
There was a disposition to wait for further
developments.
Some clU-edRed Issues were stronger.
Ahout 6,260,000 wns disbursed In divi
dends today. Allied bonds were firm. Amer
icans were Idle, but steady. Canadians were
dull. Home rails hnrdencd on a demand
from Investors. Hnlf yearly dividend
declarations are nearly completed,
Argentine rails were Irregular, as they
were affected by earnings. Brazilian
descriptions moved upward again on con
tinued Improvement In the position of cx
change. Scandinavian securities were
strong on purchases for exchange purposes.
Rubbers were weak. In sympathy with the
staple, which flattened again. Brewers were
strong In spots on dividend announcements.
Oils hesitated.
Extra for Eastern Steel
NEW YOIIK, Aug. 1. The Eastern Steel
Company has declared a regular quarterly
dividend or z4 per cent and an extra rtlvl
dend of 5 per cent on the common stock.
The regular dividend Is payable October IB
to stock of record October 1 and the extra
dlvidond September 1 to stock of record
August 18. The regular quarterly divi
dends of 194 Per cent each on the first and
second preferred stocks were also declared,
