FINANCIAL NEWS
STRONG TONE MAINTAINED BY CHIEF
ISSUES IN THE WALL STREET MARKET
List 'Follows United States Steel Common Strength in
Late Trading Due to Reported Peace Move at
Washington Marines in Good Demand
High Points in Today's Financial News
Chief issues maintained strong tone in Wall street trading, especially the
steel shares. Stocks of companies expecting Government orders active on
New York Curb. Grain and cotton irregular, liar silver unchanged. Some
favorable railroad earnings issued. Foreign exchange steady. Money easy in
Wall street.
Lfi
NEW YOHK. July 30.
Stock trading wns kept quite active all through the day In splto of Intense
heat and a general confusion of market news and price movements. Tho chief
Issues, especially tho steel Industrial group, mnlntnlncil n strong tono all
through the day, with United States Steel common, nfter advancing to 123T
and reacting to 122, ranking u brisk up turn to 12414.
Generally tho rest of tho list followed the leader on all these movements,
but thcro were somo exceptions to tho ndvnnclng tendency. Industrial Alcohol
nnd Distillers, which were strong In tho forenoon, declined later In tho day, and
tho copper st6cks failed to nharo In tho steel ndvnnccs.
It was said on tho bonrdroom floqr nnd In tho Wall street district gen
erally that tho strength In tho late trading was duo to tho reported peace
movo at Washington as a result of earnest endeavors of Oermany to reach
a basis for negotiations. Washington ridiculed theso statements, but they
found many believers In quarters where tho market tono Is determined.
Tho Marino issues wcro In good demand during tho greater part of tho
day, with tho preferred stocn ndvnnclng moro than 1 point, nnd Baldwin Loco
motive and American Locomotive wcro helped In their market position by
allusions td what these companies will do If any foundation oxlsts for tho
peace reports.
Itallroad stocks were steady, but were neglected becnu&o of the devotion of
tho limited speculative Interests to the Industrial Issues.
In bonds tho most Important feature was activity In tho Liberty Loan,
with tho full bonds of 11000 or more par, nfter declining to 9D 33-50, ndvnnclng
to 9D 47-50.

The Frugality
of the French
In France the saving qualities of
the people is one of the reasons why
National loans meet with such in

In the United States some four
millions of subscribers to the Liberty

thrift.
In France, systematic saving has
been a national habit for over a gen

We, as a nation, are just acquiring
it. Saving helps the nation as well
as the individual. Open an interest
