Stock market in New York all through day consisted of bear raids and
bull flurries. Some issues had wide ranges.. War stocks active on New 1 ork
Curb. Glain lower. Cotton irregular. Bar silver unchanged. Philadelphia
Company June and three months' earnings good. Rubles weak n foreign
exchange market.
NEW YORK, July 24.
Tho stock market all through tho day consisted of a series of bear raids
and bull flurries, with leadlnp stocks quickly recovering their balance nnd
comlni? back to nbout tho average rango of many days past. Some) Issues had
an oxtremb range of 5 points, Ohio Cities Gas being traded In at 63U to 68.
nnd closely held specialties llko Corn Products nnd Centrnl Leather at times
had violent ndvanccs, followed by rapid declines.
United Stntcs Stcol common, which must bo still regarded as tho key to tho
general market, advanced to 122, from which It dropped to 120Vi. showing a
substantial loss from yesterday's flnal price. Tho copper stooka nleo alternated
between strength and weakness, with little net chango at tho end of n
variable day's trading.
There was a genoral disposition to find Incentives for speculative operations
on both sides of tho market In tho Washington advices. Renowed references
to price fixing worn used ns reasons for soiling Industrials and railroads at
Intervals during the day, while the progress mado In war revonuo legislation
was taken as a bullish lncentlvo and formed tho basis for fulllsh demonstra
tions In tho afternoon.
Tho genoral market situation, however, seemed to havo developed strength
and tho market was more sensitive to bullish Influences than It has been for
several weeks. .
Less attontlon was paid to the uncertainty over the St. Paul dividend action,
which Is to bo takon on Thursday. Some of tho railway issues, including
Missouri Pacific, moved up because of a disposition on tho Street to plaeo a
favorablo construction on tho Intcrstoto Commerco Commission ruling on long
and short haul rates.
There was a better demand for tho higher-priced bonds today, but trading
In tho railway Issues continued small, and thoso sccurltlrs showed little change.
Largo transactions wcro again mado In tho Liberty Loan and In tho foreign
Government bonds at the same prices which have prevailed for somo time.

LONDON, July 24. A feeling of reserve
was manifested In the Stock Exchange to
day, becauso of the news from Russia. Tho
markets were dull, with operations re
stricted. Although there was no large
selling, buying orders were often canceled.
Tho gilt-edged section wavered, owing to
tho latest credit vote of 650,000,000, the
largest single issue since tho outbreak of
tho war.
Russian bonds wero flat, but other Allied
descriptions were maintained, Americans
and Canadian Pacifies receded following
tho setback In prices at New York. Sat
isfactory earnings failed to help Grand
Trunk's, which sagged.
Homo rails were narrow and mixed. Ar
gentine lines wero weak under renewed
offerings. Brazilians also dropped again,
having been affected by tho adverse posi
tion of exchange. Rubber shares wero firm,
in sympathy with the staple Mines and
0II3 were slow. Current dividend payments
caused support to be given to bnnk shores.

nominal quotations rubles developed weak
ness, selling down to the low records of
21.10 for cables and 21 for checks. The
depression was obviously due to the un
favorable military news from Russia.
French exchange was a shade easier, while
pesetas displayed firmness. Sterling .and
the other classes of exchanges showed a
steady tone on a moderate volume of deal
