A more cheerful sentiment was apparent In tlio stock rnnrkct today, mid
there was n considerably enlarged volume of business for n midsummer market.
Stress wns laid upon larger returns to the railroads on' tho new rates than
had beon previously figured, and more Interest was shown In Saturday's excep
tionally strong bank statement, which was reflected ngntn In easier rates for
time money. Tho corn crop forecast, the war neWB and tho United States
Steel tonnugo statement were discussed favorably.
It also became clear that the professional bear traders had overextended
themselves yesterday offering down stocks In a narrow market. Advances
Hinging nil the way from 1 to 4 points took plaro In nn unusually extended
list, with tho maximum Improvement In Industrial Alcohol.
Corn Products mado n new high record In connection with the crop report
estimates nnd predictions of Impending favorable dividend notion. Such gains
were scored as 2?i In Pittsburgh foal and Atlantic Onlf, 2 -14 In Bethlehem
Steel "U," 2Vi In Cruclblo Steel, 2 In Tobacco Products nnd American Sumatra

BETTER TONE IS SHOWN ON CURB;
SUPPORT FOR HIGH-PRICED ISSUES

Thcro was n decidedly better tone with activity In tho Curb market today,
with good supporting orders In many of the higher-priced Issues. Small reces
sions were shown after the opening, but this was quickly followed by n good
upturn, many Issues showing gains of from a small fraction to moro than a
" point. Curtlss Aeroplane, after a small reresslon, moved up nearly 2 points.
Wright-Martin was In fair demand nt a fractional-change. Hutterworth Judson
moved up 3 points on small purchases. Submarlno lloat rose moro than a
point. Aetna Explosives and Maxim Munitions ruled steady.
Motor stocks were Ilrm but less active. Chevrolet Improved n point, while
United Motors on light trading roso .
Oil shares were active nnd somewhat firmer, Midwest rteflnlng fluctuating
within a range of 5 points. Other Independent Issues moved within narrow limits.
Mining shares were iulet, with tho exception of sliver Issues, which
developed a firmer tono In sympathy with the strength In the metal.
In bonds Husslan Diss and 6s were strong nt a further advance of 1
point for both.

The continued advance to a new high
record for silver In New York and London
Is In line with tha expectations of the best
trade authorities In this country, and pre
dictions are freely made that the whlto
metal will move up considerably from the
present level.
It Is stated that the buying has been on
a large scale recently, and from the Inquiries
which have been made It Is taken for grant
ed that the demand Is far from satisfied.
The United States Government has been and
still Is a quiet and steady purchaser and
within the last ten days" China and India
have bought direct from this Country.
Silver has been shipped from this country
to the usual channels of consumption, via

COTTON MARKET DULL,
WITH LITTLE CHANGE
NEW YOBK. July 10.
Irregularity showed In the opening of the
cotton market this morning. January de
clined 3 points and March two points, but
other months were 2 to 14' points net higher.
The reason for the drop In the two late
months was the fact that there were com
petitive offers without a demand until prices
had been brought down. Boom traders and
commission houses were sellers, while
southern Interests and one' spot house pur
chased. Liverpool was again a seller and It was
stated by some of those doing this business
that the English center has been active here
recently, doing a large amount of scale
business on one side or the other. After
the call October, which was 13 points higher
at tha start, reacted 9 points, but then
rallied again, while business In other months
was small with little change at the end of
the first ten minutes. .
Some good rains were1 reported east of
the Mississippi, North Carolina having more
than an Inch (In several places. Lighter
precipitation was. shown In other States.
Tha receipts at the ports for the day wero
estimated at S00O bales, agalnat 12,7
bales laBt week, 10,076 bales last year and
7804 bales two years ago.

By far the most Important development
In tho Philadelphia financial situation to
day was the declaration of another dividend
on the preferred stock of tho Keystone
Telephone Company to apply on back
payments. The dividend, which Is 21i
per cent. Is payable August 1 to stock
holders of record July 20. With the pay
ment of this dividend there remains $26.26
in back payments due on the Issue, the out
standing amount of which Is 1 .9 6.860.
Another favorable earnings lme'W
has been Is.ued by the Keystone Telephone
Company. The statement Is for June nnd
the first six months of the nscal year. Tho
samo showing l mado by the company as
Is common with other companies reporting
earnings nt this time, In that the operating
expenses are eating Into the gross receipts,
thus cutting down tho net considerably.
While tho gross for June was ".,2u3.
which represented on Increase of J9888 as
compared with the corresponding month of
tho previous year, only S17B4 of this In
crease was saved for tho net by reason of
tho fact that the operating expenses gained
$8134. Tho net earnings were $02,303, com
pared with JC0.64D In 191C Tho surplus
was $34,512, n gain of $1416.
For Uit? six months the cut Into the gross
earnings by the operating expenses was
even more pronounced. The gross for that
period was $777,828, a gain of $69,696,
while the operating expenses amounted to
$102,965, nn Increase of $44,091. This left a
net of $374,873, a gain of only $16,601 over

options were mado in corn today, following
a weaker start, duo to overnight selling
orders as the result of yesterday's bearish
Government crop report. It was claimed
that thcro had been too much comptiny on
tho bear side, and that the pit had over
sold, for it required only- vigorous buying
by local bulls to sturt shorts covering.
The news factor was n very hot wavol
with lack of molsturo in the Southwest,
nnd some complaints of damage were re
ceived from that section. There was profit
taking on extreme bulges. Tho cash sit
uation remained strong, with bales of No.
2 yellow nt $1.85. Old crop supplies nro
being depleted rapidly. A news agency
despatch from Zurich quoting parts of
Chancellor Von Bethmann-Hollweg's recent
speech before the nclschtag Committee at
tracted attention, nnd was looked upon as
Indicating that peace is not near.
The contract supply hero gained 3000
bushels during tho week to 10,000 bushels,
against 008,000 bushels last year.
Tho market at Liverpool was quiet and
easier on Improved weather In Argentina,
where tha grade of arrivals Is better.
The visible supply of wheat ln the United
Stntcs, according to Lradstrcet's, Is 18,402,
000, a decreaso of 1,309,000 bushels for the
week, and compares with 49,640,000 bushels
last ear; In Canada It Is 18,432,000 bUBhols,
a decreaso of 1,110,000 bushels for the week
and compares with 43,382,000 bushels a

last year.
The market at Liverpool was weak on
liberal arrivals from abroad, heavy re
ceipts ln Argentina and reduced consump
tion In the United Kingdom. The low on

2c higher at 66V4CJ the bottom on Septem
ber was 51 Vic, the best 6514c and the final
