QNCINNATI ORCHESTRA
PLAYS POPULAR PIECES
Kindlcr Now to Be Heard on the
Phonograph Many Vocal
Selections Offered
By the Phonograph Editor
The part played by Important ttymphonlc
orchestra In their relation to the phono
graph Is becoming le of a "thinking role"
nd more of a leading lady from month to
month An Instance of thla Is afforded by
the Columbia Company's signing of the Cin
cinnati Orchestra. This body of musicians,
at the head of which our now own Dr Leo
pold Htokonskt stood, has been excellently
regarded by musical critics, and has Indeed
merited that appreciation.
The numbers played for a two-part rec
ord are tho Imperlshablo "Heautlful lllue
Danube" watt of Johann Strauss and tho
teemlngly equally Imperishable, yet hardly
s Interesting, Ilnrcarolle from Offenbach's
"Tales of Hoffmann." This Is an admlra
bio way of approarhlng the Intelligences of
people who llko their music with plenty of
milk In It. Kor later on, they discover cof
fee and tea are capital drinks as well The
road that leads to fine musical taste often
proceeds through Just such windings as
Offenbach and Strauss
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Is
now conducted by Dr. Krnst Kunwnld He
Is a thoroughgoing student, so Ohloans aver
Here his ncademlo knowledge Is tempered
with that popularity of appeal which the
music contains.
JCot many Thlladctchlans seem to know
it, but the gifted young cellist of the Phila
delphia Orchestra, Hans Kindlcr, has mado
several records for Victor. Among them
may bo noted Saint Saens' "The Swan."
always effective through the agency of thli
mellow Instrument, with Rubinstein's "Mel
ody In K" on the reverse ; nnd Schumann's
"Traumerel," with nartlctt's "A Dream"
Mr. Klndler Is one of tho most vigorous per
sonalities In his young especlalejjholr, and
he transmits that vivid quality In his exe
cution. Tho records Issued for the current month
display tho usual diversity. Somo of the

New Columbia offerings Include Francis
Macmillen's playing of his own "Causcrle"

"Carry Mc Back to Old Vlrglnny." sung
by Louis Clravetire, tho baritone, about
whose Identity so much fuss was once
raised, nnd two contrasting numbers, sung
by Lucy Gates, soprano. One of these Is

UNITS AT ALLENTOWN
WANT OFFICER TO STAY
Ambulance Camp Members Re

ant W. J. Whitehouse
ALLK-VTOW.V, Ta., July 7 There was
regret at tho United States, nmbulance
camp when Lieutenant Walter J. White
house was shifted from command of the
General Charles A. Snyder Unit A, of
rottsvllle, and placed In command of the
Florida unit. His work has been so satis

County he has had In charge Is destined to
lie nmong the first to be sent to Frnnce,
under command of Lieutenant Jlufus A. Van
Voast, who came here from service In the
famous French Foreign Legion.
Tho Potts.vlllo boys saw a new light to
day wherf they got their equipment for the
"hike." which Is tho camp expression for
going across tho sea. This Included a new
uniform, bob-nail shoes, revolvers, to pro
tect themselves from tho barbarity of tho
Germans, who are shooting rescue workers;
knives, knapsacks, tents and a field kitchen.
This unit thus equipped Is Section 19, In
charge of Sergeant Homer Itelgle, and Sec

Just as ready to "hike" as the I'ottsvllle

Coach Francis Gnrgon nnd William James
The men from Fordhnm fill the alt with
their compliments about Gargon, who de

LEADER RODIA SUCCESS
AT WOODSIDE PARK
Band Wins Instant Favor Misa El
lison to Sing New
Numbers
It has required less than a week for
Giuseppe Rod I a to establish himself a prime
favorite with Philadelphia music lovers.
One week ago Conductor Rodla made his
appearance at Woodsldo Park with his Im
perlal Hand. Ills success was Instanta
neous. Years of experience have taught
him the alue of co-operation between
leader and musicians, nnd as a result he not
only has the confidence of his men but also
their devotion. Few leaders have a more
striking personality than Slgnor Itodln He
has surrounded himself with an aggregation
of high-class musicians who are responsive
to his every movement
The success of Miss Edith M. Ellison has
resulted In placing this accomplished so
prano In the forefront of Philadelphia slng
.ers. Miss Ellison Is forceful In expression,
while her voice Is full, rich and of excellent
volume. Her painstaking and meritorious
musical efforts have made her many friends.
She will sing several new selections at
Woodslde Park during the week.
With the withdrawal of the Mayor's pro
hibition of fireworks, the park management
has restored the weekly fireworks display.
In accordance with the request of many
patrons, Friday night has again been se
lected an Fireworks Night, and many noVel
tlea will be Introduced weekly. A number
of new amusements are being Installed
which will materially add to the popularity
of the Park.
