WIDEN TO OPPOSE
OSBORNE IN FINAL
(Sermantown Player Favor
ite to Win From Belfield
Star at Wilmington
STAKT Pt.AY AT 3 P. M.
IllUm T, Tllden. 2d, of the fJerman
town Cricket Club; who needs no Intro
duction to tennis players In the East, will
clajJh.wlth Percy S, Osborne, of the Bel
field Country Club, In the final round of
(Ingles In the Delaware State tournament
at the Wilmington Country Club.
With weather conditions favorable, the
match will start promptly at 3 o'clock,
Tllden, who has been playing phenomenal
tennis of late, Is a big favorite, but those
who know Osborne and his game ray he
will give Tllden a battle. Only the match
can tell the story, tor If Tllden Is erratic
he may beat himself; It he Is going well,
there la nothing but a Tllden victory in
Ight.
Osborne has a remarkable record for
teadlnesa plutJaccuracy, and In Justice to
the Belfield 'MM It Is quite possible that
he will have considerable to do with tho
final result. If Osborne can fathom Til
den's "cannon-ball" serve, if he can outwit
him at the net and outgame him from the
back court, an upset Is not Impossible.
There are many "Ifs" In a tennis match.
Tllden Errs In Doubles Play
Tllden and his young doubles partner.
Beck, lost the final round of the Delaware
State double to K. E. Dixon and Alexander
Thayer yesterday In three out of four sets.
Tllden played brilliantly In spots, but his
Thlsses were costly and his court work not
the best. Tlldan's big mistake Is playing
too near the center of tho net.
Time and again he mlsaed shots which,
had he been In position, he would have re
turned. Tllden tries to cover too much
of the. courts and often takes shots right In
frrnt of his partner This works well where
one weak player and one strong; player form
a team, especially In the mixed doubles a
style which has brought Tllden so many
victories.
Tllden must learn to play the doubles
game without crossing over to his part
ner's side of the court. He must trust Beck
to look after his own side and take his
(hare of the shots. Team work Is out of
the question when one player attempts to
do more than his share of the work, nnd the
results of such tactics Is ultimate disaster.
If Tllden expects Beck to be a depend
able doubles partner he must let the Junior
assume his share of the responsibility and
take his medicine until Beck Ih Just as dan
gerous as either Thayer or Dixon would be
on his side of the net.
Beach Haven Tourney Next Week
Many of the local players will compete In
the annual Beach Haven tennis tournament,
whteh starts next Monday and contlnuen
over the Fourth. Tllden and Heck will both
play at Beach Haven, and It Is possible
that Percy Osborne will take In the trip.
The majority of the players are from this
section.

KNIGHT LEADS IN
AMATEUR FINALS
In First Eighteen Holes in
Championship Golf Tour
ney Has Buxton 2 Up
PLAY MOST INTERESTING
WHITKMARSH. Pa, June 30.
Kred W. Knight of Aronlmlnk, led Cam
eron B. Buxton, of Huntingdon Valley, at
the end of the first eighteen holes of the
thirty-six holes final round of tho Indi
vidual championship of Philadelphia here
today. 2 up.
Probably no more Interesting golf has
ever been witnessed In tho final round of
this ccnt, and tho fact that Knight had
a 73 for the eighteen holes to Buxton's 74
proves that both men played very fine golf
The going was In favor of Knight, but the
Aronlmlnk representative, on the whole,
deserved his lead
Tho champion drew first blood, for on
the first hole he was on the green In two,
to Knight's three and both took two putts.
Tho second was hahed In par fours, but
on the third, Buxton put his approach shot
Into the creek and took a five to Knight's
four. Knight was a trllle lucky, for his
npproach shot only Just cleared the trees
and landed on tho green. Knight played
a very poor tee shot on the fourth and
went Into the creek, nnd followed It up
with a poor third. Buxton was short of
the green with his tee shot, but won the
hole with a four to a five, making him ono
up again. Both had good drives on the
fifth, but Kn'gh,'ii second was a beauty,
virtually dead to the hole and he was down
In a bird three.
Buxton's second was Just off the green
to th right of the hole and, although he
made a bold bid for a thr'e. he failed by
Inches only. Knight was wonderfully lucky
on the sixth, ills lee snot was in me
rou(;h to the right nnd he put his second
Into the pit at the back of the green to
the left. The ball wan nicely teed up
nnd. clipping tho ball out. Knight put It
In the cup fifty feet away. Buxton was
on In two and had a long putt for n three
and naturnlly failed to make It. On the
seventh Buxton drove out of bounds and
took four to reach tho green.
