NO LET-UP SHON
IN STEEL TRADE
Average Prices Now in Excess of

NEW YORK. Juno 16.
Tho Block market In tho half day's trading showed a disposition to recover
from tho unsettling effect of tho prossuro exerted against tho Liberty Loan
yostcrday afternoon and tho general disturbance of loans of call money by
tho local banking institutions.
It was current comment today that virtually every loan that could be
drawn In was called by tho banks, causing tho urgent selling which mada tho
market so weak Just as tho tlmo when tho Liberty Loan was forced below
par. Later In tho day tho banks put out this eamo money at tho C per cent rate.
Today thero was a good deal of talk about tho payments nlroady made to
tho Government on account of tho loan being tied up and not kopt liquid, but
it was assumed that somo action will bo taken in tho way of an agreement or
understanding between tho banks and tho Government by which funds will
bo doposltod in tho Federal banks and a money tension avoided.
Thero was a strong tono in a number of stocks during tho forenoon, but
at tho eamo tlmo United States Steel common was in supply becauso of talk
of larger margins on loans being required. That stock sold down from 131
to 130 and then rallied to 131. Bcthlchom Steel "B" dropped from 148H to
147. Heading opened up at 98, droppod to 96 and quickly camo back to 98.
Pronounced strength was shown in Pittsburgh Coal, which advanced 1 to
tho now high record of 66.
In tho last few minutes of trading thero was a rally all around, prices
going to abovo tho closo of last night in many instances. Thero was a vigorous
ndvanco in Wilson Company, which sold abovo 76.
Interest in tho bond market was attached to tho dealings In Liberty Loan
bonds. Thoso Government bonds wero In better demand today, opening at
100 and advancing on fairly largo transactions to 100 5-50, tho highest prlco at
which sales wero mado yesterday, afternoon. Changes In other issues wero
without importance
DISTURBING FACTORS ARE ABSENT
IN TRADING ON THE NEW YORK CURB
NEW TORK, Juno 16.
Trading on tho Broad Stroet Curb progressed without boing influenced by
tho disturbing factors which wero noted in eomo stocks on tho big board. This
is duo partly to tho fact that tho curb is a cash markot, and now rules for
margins and calling in of loans aro not feared in that trading group.
Tho most prominent feature of tho dealings was tho trading in 60,000
shares of Wright-Martin Aircraft nt 5 to 6V. With tho expiration of tho
(imo in which rights to subscrlbo can bo oxercised, tho financing of that com
pany la regarded as completed, and today much was said about largo contracts
being mado with tho French Government and the United States.
Thero was again a good demand for Eastern Aniline, which sold at tho
new high record of 5, with tho buying coming from strong interests identified
with important elements In tho dyestuff trodo.
More than 25,000 shares of Submurlno sold from 33 down to 32U and
then up to 34. Triangle Film continued firm, with tho stock steadily taken
at 2, but tho supply at tho present lovel has apparently been exhausted. United
Verdo sold at 39 nnd Ohio Copper sold at 1. Thero was little trading In
tho oil stocks.

NEW YORK, June 16.
Steel prices have reached a goal which
only a. few months ago would have been
considered Impossible. Average quotations
at the present time aro slightly In excess
of $110 per ton, an advance of more than
111 over last week, while showing Increases
of about J50 and $80, respectively, over this
week. In Juno, 131C, and 1915. It Is the
opinion In the trade that there Is no let-up
in sight.
Tho markets for pig iron and for old ma
terial were again In competition, for the
position of scoring the largest advances In
the last week. In pig Iron sales of Bes
semer are reported to have been made In
the Pittsburgh district at better than $56
per ton, or more than $5 per ton over pre
viously prevailing quotations. The buying
of pig Iron has been large nnd the demand
is still continuing, indicating that the ad
vance has not yet been halted.
In the scrap material It Is noted that rail
road material has scored the sharpest ad
rance. Philadelphia has reported gains of
from $4 to $7 per ton, the latter for Iron
rails, and car wheels are materially higher.
Heavy scrap In Pittsburgh has been put up
$7 per ton, and the demand Is keeping up at
a remarkable pace.
In some quarters It Is estimated that the
Government will require ns much as 12,000.
000 tons of rolled steel products, and this
has been a cause of strength In the steel
markets. The Government's shipbuilding
program will take a largo amount of ship
plates and other articles, and the mills are
doing everything possible to conform their
operations to the needs of tho country.
The best reports In the Government fields
re that Government purchases of cars will
amount to about 100,000, to be UBed by the
United States as well as its Allies In the
war.
AH branches of the steel trade are strong
and, although here and there it is noted
that the demand is not as large as re
cently, it Is said the manufacturers are not
looking for additional business.
Some big export Inquiries are in the
market for tlnplate involving about. 250 000
boxes, of which 100,000 boxes are for Italy
100,000 for tho Orient and the remainder
scattered. Domestic demand for this prod
uct also is large.
Predictions are heard of an early an
nouncement of higher prices -for wire prod
ucts, and some makers are reported to
havej withdrawn from the- market, at least
temporarily
The Government has awarded contracts
for 10JSOO tohs of structural steel for addl
tlonal Improvements at navy yards aqd at
arsenals.
This males a total of 75.000 tons ordered
- for these purposes and additional contracts
ara pending for about 10.000 tons, half of
whlafl Is for storehouses for ammunition
anil BtnM and for other structures' cbnnect.
