graduates at tho commencement exercises
today in Roberts Hall

graduates liao Joined tho aumbllanco unit
of tho Pennsylvania Hospital and aro now
In Franco, ten aro In tho officers' training
camps, several hao enlisted In various
military organizations not yet callal out,
and a number moro hao Rono Into agri
cultural work.
Eight of tho graduates receded their de
grees "in absentia." Two who are with
Ease Hospital No. 10 In Franco aro Law
renco M llamscy, captain of last ear's
football team, and Herbert L Jones. Thoso

Doctor Sharpless. "While In common with
other true Americans we hao all sympi
thlzed with tho purposes and objects of our
Goernment in Its opposition to tho dicta
torial nnd ruthless operations of tho Teu
tonlo countries, when It camo to metheds
there might ha de eloped an excellent
opportunity to create discord and disunity.

recognition of each man's right to follow
his own lino of duty when seriously nnd
deliberately considered, and the collego
gae on this basis its benediction to all

rious consideration, and that youthful ardor
should not tako boys In their teens away
from preparation for their llfo work

ing, Intellectual instruction and moral dis
cipline which we hao all concluded nfter
eight weeks of trial, has been an excellent
preparation for any branch of national serv
ice Work with motorcar and machinery,
with the problems of camp life, with pick
and shovel with matters pertaining to hos
pital serlco and aid to tho Injured, to
gether with long cross-country walks, all
done under strictly Imposed discipline, has
absorbed tho energies of four-fifths of our
students who, with a number of faculty
members hae gone into this training with
a. heartiness nnd persistence most Inspir

the president-elect of Hacrford, Doctor

secretary of tho board of managers. Ho
himself Is a graduate and hns been a pro
fessor In the college With n, collegiate
training broadened by several jears of
Rraduate study at Harvard and In Europe
and an experlenco In college management
gained by eight ears as tho head of the
large and flourishing department of ro
mance languages at Cornell, ho brings overy
augury of success with him "
