Striking Article by Sydney Brooks
in Sunday's Public Ledger
V
"IRELAND could have Home Rule tomorrow, if only the Irish
could agree among themselves," says Sydney Brooks. "The
A average Englishman has but one sentiment on the Irish ques
tion, and that is to get it settled."
Writing frankly as a Home Ruler, Mr. Brooks outlines the diffi
culties and intricacies with which the Irish question is beset
difficulties that have baffled a statemanship peculiarly prolific of
happy political results in every other part of the world.
The problems which the forthcoming Irish convention will face
are many and formidable, but the prospect is not hopeless, for the
Irish question is at last in the hands of the Irish. England has
given it up, and any form of settlement that will satisfy Ireland as
a whole will meet with the instant approval of England.
For sheer insight into a highly technical political problem this
article is unique. It is of particular interest to Philadelphians,
since the forthcoming Irish convention owes its origin largely to
American influence, much of which emanated from this city.
