More activity was seen In Lake Superior
Corporation stock on the Philadelphia Stock 4
Exchange today than has been the case for
some tlmo There was a demand for tho
stock as soon ns trading started, and this
demand carried tho price up until It was
up almost a full point ns compared with
the closing of last night Much of tho
bulng of tho stock was In odd lots, Indi
cating that It was being picked up by small
traders No news camo out ns ft reason for
the buvlng of tho Block nnd tho Street gen
erally looked upon the bujlng ns tho result
of tho large demand and nctlvlty In United
States Steel common which was present
both hero nnd In New York all through the
day
United States Steel common easily over
shadowed everything else on the list, nnd
It got back Into old-time form as n market

the result of the action of the board of

COTTON ADVANCES
AFTER EASY START
V4
Early Drop, Caused by Liquida
tion on Lower Cables, Is Off
set by Renewed Demand
NHW YORK. June 13
A sharp drop In Liverpool cables before
tho local opening caused declines of 2 to
22 points In first cotton prices this morn
ing, but these were quickly recovered nnd
nt the end of the first ten minutes the mar
ket was selling about 10 points over tho
previous close
The nbsence of any broad speculative
trade was seen In the vvldo range of
fluctuations between sales In some cases of
B to 10 points
Liquidation on tho opening call was fol
lowed by a renewal of rade buying and
a demand from n New Crleans Interest,
which, meeting a sudden scarcity of calls,
had a very strong effect on the markot.
Tho weather was generally favorable
over the belt .although lower tempcrnturcs
nro looked for In the southwest In a day
or two
The early ndvonco carried active months
33 to 36 points net higher with all positions
making new high records for tho season
Julj contracts sold up to 2B 25 and October
to 24 70, while March deliveries sold at
25 12
Contracts were scarce on this advance,
becnuso of continued buylns attributed to
tho trade and covering by early sellers.
However, offerings Increased during, the
mlddlo of tho morning nnd prices broke
several points nfter 11 o'clock
In the afternoon tho market turned a lit
tle easier and the closo was from 8 to 35
points higher
It Is reported that 1S00 bales of cotton
nro being loaded at Savannan to come to
New York for delivery on contract Pre
dictions nro made also that there will be
other shipments.
