NEW YOrtK, Juno 7.
The continued competitive buying of Industrial Alcohol mado that stock
command most nttontion In today's trading on tho New York Stock Exchange
Sevoral houses representing tho strongest flnindal Interests wcro buyors of
tho stock and carried Us prlco up to 166. within CV; points of Us high record
of last year and comparing with the low record of 02 V4 lost Decombor. Yes
terday tho stock roso 16 points.
Tho low level of this year was made on April 21, when tho stock sold at
100M. In all tho tlmo since then there has been evidence of an increasing
short Interest, with ho stock londlng flat or at a premium, while tho rate
for other stocks commanded a carrying charge of 3 to 4 per cont.
Nearly nil tho trading element on the floor was committed to tho short
side at frequent Intervals, and somo of the largo operators put out extenslvo
lines of shorts and aro understood to havo sustained sevcro losses.
From tlmo to tlmo reports havo boon current of a readjustment of
capitalization, and tho statement has been definitely mado than nn extra divi
dend of 100 por cent Is close at hand and that tho doublo capitalization will
then bo put on an 8 por cent dividend basis.
So far thoro has boon no opon corner of tho short account, but tho
exhaustion of resources resulting from tho violent advance has In itself forced
urgont covering.
Movements wcro extremely wldo In many other stocks. United State3
Steel common, which closed yesterday at 1314, advanced to 134H. a new high
record, and then dropped to below 132. Dcthlehcm Steel "B" roso 3 to 161,
also a new high record. Mexican Petroleum advanced more than 5 points to
103i, and American Sugar Itcflnlng moved up 2 to 119.
Many of tho minor stcol Industrials mado gains ranging from 2 to 4 points,
and at one tlmo tho railways showed moderato strength, with Union Pacific
moving up 2 points to 137.
Vhon tho speculative lntcrost was concentrated In Industrial Alcohol tho
natural result was that reactions occurred In other stocks. When tho buying
wavo was In full force It was attributed to tho western speculative clement,
which had for a long tlmo been active on the bull sldo of tho Street, but since
trading in wheat was forbidden on tho Chicago Board of Trado this element
has boon dovotiftg Us speculative attention to trading in tho Industrials.
Thero was no Bpeclal feature to tho trading In tho bond market, Anglo
French Bs selling nt D3 and 034, and somo of tho railway Issues mado Email
fractional gains, whllo others declined on trifling Bales.
