first brought Hawaii prominently before the
ejes of Americans. Once the craze for
the Pacific Island was estnbllsjted In the

tained their grip on popularity. It has been
Impossible to dislodge them from their

furor over Hawaiian music, very few per
sons have troubled themsehes to find out
the source of this Insinuating, smoothly
flowing, sensuous melody

heard In America The natle chants are
barbaric, primitive, wild, ns wild ns those
of mid-Africa, untouched by modern civili

Hawaiian ditties strummed on ukuleles by

taurant orchestras come from Hawaii, tight
enough Hut they are not essentially Poly
nesian About 1820. when the language was being
formulated, the Island was lslted by groupi
of missionaries, bent on Christianizing the

the missionaries were. In many cases them
