    RACISTS "GOOD

Bv MARY ELAND
tilitlve observer, Pennsylvania Woman 8uf.

X .portsman. or a "good loser," from the
roman' Mewpolnt Is one who fights and
fllhtg w hen fighting for right despite all
eiit. and "'ho when the fight eems futile
Bchts because of the fight Itself knowing
time, fometlmes a long, long time, must
brlnf victory
A sportsman and a "good loser," from the
...I. i. iu. man's viewpoint. I lake it fmm
what Is sld- '" one ,vho whfn defeated
once even If unfairly, ceases fighting
It has been reported tn me that the op
ponents of woman suffrage In the House
f Representatives ,,av'' declared that
romen arc "hard losers." that they nre
poor sports ' Hoth theso things I hope we
are If being them means It carries convic
tion that we will not have done until wo
have vvon " ,l ''oes convince them the
JtflJlatlve gentlemen will have the correct
conception of the fighting qualities of
women.
TOLITirS" VS. FAJIl PLAY
I hate endeavored to get the man-angle
tpon the subject of fighting, and I have not
been able to find a single person who does
not agree with women that the method of
killing the previous woman suffrage bill
eras poor sportsmanship.
"But." it usually Is added. "It vvas
politics ' '
1 have asked It sportsmanship Is not
based upon fair play If opponents are not
lupposed to havo the same weapons, the
Mine treatment
Some say your mistake Is that you do not
defeat your opponents nt the polls, and I
tsk with what weapons, when the oppo
nents will not enable us to go to the polls
Some say you should treat your oppo
nents gentl, for some of them will be hack
at the next session 01 me legislature.
So at last I get a glimmer beat them at
the polls, where we hae no ote, but treat
them gently while they arc In the Legisla
ture, because they will be back That seems
to be the answer
I ask If It was good sportsmanship to
Introduce a bill asking suffrage limited to
voting for presidential electors nftcr defeat
Of our previous measure And I am told
that was good tactics, but that It was no
use writing to the members of tho House,
analyzing their previous ote
So I have another glimmer take your
beating, because you are not to be given
fair treatment, hut say nothing to those who
killed your previous bill unfairly, because
they will not treat your next bill nicely.
And I suppose that is why under Its code
ef sportsmanship the committee to which
our bill was referred reported It negatively,
because It was not good sportsmanship to
send it to the floor of the House, there to
be fought In the open.
There must be several brands of sports
manshlp from the inexplicable man-angle,
for Isadore Stern was quoted as having
laid that he did not approve "kill ng in
private," but thought tho bill shou d have
been reported to the House, where it could
have been fought openly
It's all very, very plain To be a good
jportsman In the eyes of legislative oppon
ents Is to do as your opponents desire, but
never neer question their sportsmanship
even when they find no one to approve their
SNoCone has told me yet. although I hae
liked all those who commented, that any
group that has been before the present
House with progressive legislation has ro
eelve'd sportsmanlike treatment. And
everyone says that there Is no "chance
that the present House will grant women
anything that looks like suffrage or pass
iny progressive legislation, for that matter.
DEFINE GAMES
From what I have heard of "games" it
seems that persons who risk their own are
glen cards or weapons with which to pro
tect what is theirs and secure as much as
possible of that risked by their opponents.
In the legislative game, It seems to mo
that legislative men demand that women
lit In four games, twice In the House of
Representatives in successive sessions, twice
In the Senate and a fifth time at tho polls,
where they arc not permitted to have any
man-weapons to fight with and must defeat
these who have cards five times hefore they
secure cards with which to play those who
have had cards, or rather ballots, all the
time . ,
We were In the House of Representatives
Monday night, asking that the House as a
whole place our presidential woman suffrage
bill on the calendar notwithstanding the
negative report by Mr. Stern's committee.
We failed, and wrote In advance a letter
tp the Speaker of the House, which showed
re knew where the cards were.
I wish our bill had been one asking the
Legislature to prohibit the growing of any
6ave blue apples, or to prohibit the birds
from mating without a special license to be
Issued through a bureau to be established
with many positions. Of course, the apples
would continue to ripen to their usual colors
and the birds would not annoy the bureau
established, but I venture to say such bills
would have found high favor.
